Chad looks to modernize its livestock sector with support from Egypt.

CHAD – Chad, home to an estimated 129 million head of livestock, is pursuing strategies to modernize animal farming to increase output of meat, milk, and other by-products.
In line with this goal, Abderahim Awat Atteib, Chad’s Minister of Livestock, met with Alaa Farouk, Egypt’s Minister of Agriculture and Land Development, in Cairo to discuss potential areas of collaboration in the livestock sector.
Local media reports indicate the talks concentrated on expanding joint efforts in animal production, particularly using Egyptian expertise in genetics and feed management to improve yields of meat and dairy products in Chad.
Officials also considered the creation of an Egyptian-run laboratory in Chad to manufacture veterinary vaccines and serums aimed at meeting domestic and regional demand.
The proposed laboratory initiative would include skill transfer programs and professional training for Chadian technicians and specialists at the Egyptian International Center for Agriculture.
This initiative coincides with Chad’s official launch of its National Development Plan, “Chad Connection 2030,” on November 10, which sets a target to raise milk production to 1 million tons by 2030, up from 477,111 tons in 2023.
Egypt’s role is viewed as significant given its standing as a leading animal producer in Africa, producing 3.1 million tons of meat carcasses in 2024, second only to South Africa, according to FAO data.
The North African country is also Africa’s second-largest producer of milk and dairy products after Kenya, with an output of nearly 5.6 million tons in 2024.
Chad’s government aims to leverage Egypt’s experience in livestock management to accelerate improvements in both production efficiency and veterinary services.
The cooperation is expected to enhance not only domestic production but also regional supply chains for livestock products, aligning with Chad’s broader economic and agricultural development objectives.
Chad and Egypt plan to continue discussions on the implementation of these initiatives, focusing on practical steps to integrate technology, training, and laboratory infrastructure into Chad’s livestock sector.
