The fresh berry leader looks to strengthen its global strategy with new leadership and continued focus on sustainable agriculture.

USA – Driscoll’s, the largest fresh berry company in the world, has announced the retirement of longtime board member Neil P. DeFeo, closing a chapter that spanned nearly three decades.
DeFeo’s exit comes as the company ushers in a new face on its Board of Directors – Berry Marttin, a seasoned agricultural finance leader with international experience.
DeFeo joined Driscoll’s board in 1998 and played a key role during a time of significant growth for the company. His tenure paralleled Driscoll’s transformation from a regional grower into a global brand.
Executive Chairman J. Miles Reiter praised DeFeo’s impact, saying, “Neil has been an extraordinary board member, trusted advisor, and true friend. He brought a sharp, results-driven mindset – pushing us to act boldly and with clarity.”
“His ability to turn consumer insights into business strategy strengthened our brand and market position. I’m deeply grateful for the impact he’s had on Driscoll’s and on me personally.”
DeFeo previously served as Chairman and CEO of Playtex Products Company, where he significantly increased shareholder value before its sale to Energizer Holdings. His leadership extended across major firms like Procter & Gamble, Clorox, and Remington Products.
Beyond the corporate world, he co-founded both the Sun Products Company and Nonantum Capital Partners. His board experience covered public and private firms, private equity ventures, and several non-profits.
Welcoming global perspective
Taking DeFeo’s place on the board is Berry Marttin, who brings more than 30 years of experience in agricultural finance, sustainability, and international banking.
From 2009 to 2023, he served on the Managing Board of Rabobank, where he led global food and agriculture, leasing, and sustainability initiatives, including the Rabo Carbon Bank.
“Marttin’s depth of experience across agriculture, sustainability, and finance makes him an invaluable addition to our Board,” said Driscoll’s CEO, Soren Bjorn.
“As we scale our brand globally, his insight will help us stay agile, innovative, improve operational efficiencies, and ensure the business remains resilient against industry-wide challenges.”
Marttin’s career spans executive roles in countries such as Australia, Brazil, and Indonesia. He served as Chairman of Rabobank Amsterdam and President of the European Association of Co-operative Banks.
His current board roles include the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), Rainforest Alliance, Koppert BV, and the Hans R. Neumann Foundation. He is also part of the International Advisory Board for the Sustainable Nutrition Initiative at New Zealand’s Riddet Institute.
Recent developments
Alongside the board changes, Driscoll’s continues to focus on strategic partnerships and expanding its global footprint.
Earlier this year, the company reaffirmed its investment in sustainable agriculture through initiatives with growers in Latin America and Asia.
With Marttin’s global insight and DeFeo’s lasting legacy, Driscoll’s appears focused on building long-term stability and responsiveness in a shifting global food landscape.
