Ishida introduces x-ray system to elevate poultry bone detection

The new IX-PD unit aims to improve detection of small bones and foreign materials in poultry processing lines.

JAPAN – Ishida has released a new x-ray inspection system, the IX-PD-Poultry (IX-PD-45A2-P), developed specifically for identifying bones and other contaminants in high-volume poultry production facilities.

Designed for large-scale operations, the system incorporates Ishida’s Photo-Counting Dual Energy (PD) technology, which is intended to provide more precise inspection and reduce errors.

The unit features a dual-lane configuration that allows simultaneous scanning of multiple poultry cuts, including breast pieces, boneless thighs, and inner fillets.

According to Ishida, the system is capable of detecting small and difficult-to-identify contaminants such as wishbones, rib fragments, fan bones, and foreign objects like metal fragments and steel wires.

A key feature of the IX-PD-Poultry is its photon-counting detector, which eliminates the need for the scintillation process used in traditional x-ray systems and often prone to wear and tear.

This design is expected to result in clearer imaging, less frequent maintenance, and reduced overall operating costs.

Ishida Europe’s x-ray business manager, Glen Oxborough, stated that even small contaminants in poultry can affect brand integrity, and that the company developed the system with this concern in mind.

He added that the IX-PD-Poultry is intended to help manufacturers meet quality expectations and food safety standards more consistently.

Focus on safety and efficiency

The launch expands Ishida’s existing inspection technology offerings, targeting processors looking to address quality control in a more automated and accurate way.

The IX-PD-Poultry is part of the company’s IX-PD range, which is currently open for orders and available for poultry processors globally.

With increasing scrutiny around food safety and growing consumer demands, equipment like this is being positioned as part of a broader trend towards greater automation and digital monitoring in processing facilities.

Although pricing details have not been publicly disclosed, Ishida positions the system as a cost-effective investment over time due to reduced maintenance and downtime.

The IX-PD-Poultry is now available for deployment in processing plants, marking Ishida’s latest move in expanding its x-ray inspection portfolio tailored to the protein sector.
