The next CEO will be hired from outside the company to bring new perspectives.

USA – Cincinnati-based Kroger Co. is nearing the end of its search for a permanent chief executive officer, with an announcement expected in the first quarter of 2026.
The company confirmed in March that chairman and CEO Rodney McMullen stepped down following an investigation that found he violated the company’s ethics policy.
Ronald Sargent, the lead board director, was appointed chairman and interim CEO after McMullen’s resignation, while Kroger’s board formed a search committee and retained a nationally recognized executive search firm to identify candidates.
During a December 4 conference call on fiscal 2025 third-quarter results, Sargent told analysts that the board has been actively involved in the search and is making steady progress.
Sargent noted that while no specific date has been set for the announcement, the board expects to select a new CEO during the early months of 2026.
The board’s approach has been deliberate, with a focus on thorough evaluation of potential candidates to ensure the right leadership fit for the company.
Kroger has made it clear that the incoming CEO will be an external hire, aiming to introduce fresh perspectives while aligning with the company’s existing culture.
Sargent described the qualities sought in the next CEO, including expertise in retail transformation, a strong customer focus, experience managing large-scale operations, and alignment with Kroger’s values.
McMullen had led Kroger through its proposed US$24.6 billion acquisition of Albertsons Cos., a deal that faced more than two years of regulatory scrutiny and was ultimately blocked by the courts in December 2024, leading to its termination.
When Sargent was named interim CEO, he said the company was reviewing and updating its CEO selection criteria, a process that is part of Kroger’s annual succession planning.
The search for a new CEO comes as Kroger continues to navigate challenges in the grocery sector, including operational scaling and competition from both traditional and online retailers.
Recent developments at Kroger include product expansions and partnerships, such as Sahlen Packing Co. adding new products to stores in the Southeast and Creekstone planning a new distribution center in Kansas.
US Foods has also announced plans to establish a meat-cutting facility in a new location, reflecting ongoing supply chain and retail adjustments affecting the supermarket chain.
