USA – Meati, a company known for its mycelium-based superfood cutlets and steaks, has announced the appointment of two prominent industry leaders to its team.
The new appointments include John Bortells, who will serve as Chief Commercial Officer, and Becky O’Grady, who joins the board of directors.
Both Bortells and O’Grady bring extensive experience and a shared commitment to Meati’s goals.
John Bortells will be responsible for driving revenue growth and market expansion as Meati’s new CCO.
His role will encompass oversight of sales, marketing, and customer experience.
Bortells has a diverse background, having worked with brands at various stages of growth, such as a2 Milk, Clover Sonoma, Mighty Leaf Tea, and PepsiCo.
His expertise spans multiple sectors, including retail, food service, quick-serve restaurants, and distribution channels.
“John’s addition to the team is a significant step forward for Meati and the broader mycelium category,” said Phil Graves, CEO of Meati. “His track record in scaling mission-driven brands is impressive.
John successfully introduced a2 Milk as a safe option for those with lactose intolerance, and we are excited about his potential to further our mission.”
Bortells expressed his enthusiasm for joining Meati, citing his inspiration from the book “Entangled Life” by Merlin Sheldrake.
“My goal with Meati is twofold: to provide the best-tasting, nutrient-rich food to as many people as possible and to contribute to environmental sustainability. I aim to demonstrate what’s achievable with mycelium,” he underscored.
In addition, Becky O’Grady has joined Meati’s board of directors. O’Grady has a robust background in the consumer packaged goods industry, primarily from her tenure at General Mills.
With over 25 years of experience in both emerging and developed markets, she has led global brands and teams, expanding their reach through various retail channels.
O’Grady is also a board member for Tropicale Foods, La-Z-Boy Incorporated, Ripple Foods, and HALO Branded Solutions.
Founded in 2017 in Boulder, Colorado, Meati aims to bring mycelium, a nutrient-dense superfood, to kitchens worldwide.
Their products, primarily composed of mycelium, are high in protein and fiber while low in carbohydrates, fats, and cholesterol.
Produced through a natural fermentation process, Meati’s foods are free from heavy metals, pesticides, antibiotics, and common allergens.
The company’s products are available in 7,000 stores nationwide, including major retailers like Kroger, Albertsons, Safeway, Super Target, Whole Foods Market, and more.
