Silal expands agricultural innovation with solar greenhouses

Silal is deepening its work in sustainable agriculture with solar-powered greenhouses and knowledge exchange programs to boost food security in the UAE.

UAE – Silal, a leading agriculture firm in the UAE, has launched the region’s first fully autonomous, solar-powered greenhouses through a partnership with Shouguang Vegetables.

The new facilities aim to strengthen year-round food production and reduce farming’s impact on the environment.

The launch took place at the Silal Innovation Oasis and the opening of the Advanced Agritech Academy in Al Ain. His Highness Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed Al Nahyan attended the event, marking a major moment in the country’s plans for modern farming.

“This is a major milestone in our mission to advance agricultural technology and build sustainable food systems in the UAE,” said Salmeen Al Ameri Chief Executive Officer of Silal in a LinkedIn post.

The greenhouses operate without manual labor and rely entirely on solar energy, allowing for uninterrupted crop growth while cutting down on water and energy use.

This technology could offer more stable food supplies in a region with limited arable land and a dry climate.

Training farmers abroad

The move comes shortly after Silal organized a study trip to the Netherlands for its contracted farmers. During the visit, farmers met with agricultural experts and businesses using cutting-edge tools and practices. They learned about ways to grow crops more efficiently and with fewer resources.

“The exposure provided valuable insights that could contribute to the growth of the UAE’s agricultural sector,” said a Silal spokesperson. “It aligns with our commitment to equipping local farmers with practical knowledge that can enhance food production in the United Arab Emirates.”

This effort reflects a larger plan by Silal to make farming more efficient and sustainable. The company has invested heavily in digital tools and farmer education over the past year.

Supply chain expansion

In September 2024, Silal bought a majority stake in Al Bakrawe Holding. This move helped Silal improve its ability to move fresh fruits and vegetables across the region. Al Bakrawe has an established global sourcing network, which Silal now uses to strengthen its fresh produce supply chain.

Also, Silal has recently deepened its partnership with Borouge, a company known for making strong plastic materials.

Together, they are working on improving food packaging and developing materials that can support farming in tough environments.

“Our team is incredibly proud and deeply grateful for the support of our leadership,” said a Silal executive. “Their vision continues to inspire us to push boundaries in sustainability, innovation, and resilience.”

As food needs grow and climate conditions shift, Silal’s focus on new tools, farmer training, and regional partnerships may help ensure long-term food security in the UAE.
