SPAIN – On May 29th, Stolt Sea Farm (SSF) unveiled a groundbreaking initiative to enhance sustainability in fish processing by launching a pilot “Valorisation Room” at its Lira facility in Galicia, Spain.
The facility is dedicated to reducing waste and maximizing the use of by-products from its aquaculture operations.
During the opening ceremony, SSF underscored its dedication to advancing research and innovation to boost sustainability within its processes and across the broader aquaculture sector.
This new unit, which is part of the Food Operations department, aims to refine the cost efficiency, sustainability, and food safety of SSF’s methods for preparing turbot and sole fillets and portions.
The Valorisation Room will focus on preserving and exploring the potential reuse of by-products such as fish heads, skin, trimmings, bones, and viscera.
The team will investigate whether these materials can be repurposed into valuable products like proteins, peptides, collagen, gelatin, calcium, enzymes, and flavorings.
This project aligns with SSF’s involvement in the European LIFE REFISH initiative, reflecting the company’s commitment to fostering a circular economy.
As a division of Stolt-Nielsen Limited (SNL), SSF leads the land-based aquaculture industry and is renowned for producing premium turbot and sole.
Recently, SSF announced plans to significantly increase production, following the expansion of its flagship sole hatchery in Cervo, Galicia.
The company aims to produce 23,000 tonnes of flatfish by 2035.
In the past three years, SSF has doubled its annual sole production capacity to 1,700 tonnes.
The enhanced hatchery will enable the company to double this capacity again over the next three years, ensuring it meets its long-term production goals.
SSF currently distributes its products to over 30 countries worldwide, solidifying its position as a global leader in aquaculture.
