Uber Eats debuts in Kisumu, expanding its footprint in six cities as demand increases

KENYA- Ride-hailing company Uber has announced the entry of its food-delivery wing Uber Eats in Kisumu as the company seeks to capitalize on growing demand.

The food delivery service was initially introduced in Nairobi, Eldoret, Nakuru, Naivasha and Mombasa in 2018.

Farida Salim, CEC Trade, Tourism and Industry for Kisumu Country said, “We are pleased to welcome Uber Eats to Kisumu County and anticipate significant value being created for restaurants and small businesses.

“This is a great example of a collaboration between the private and public sector, which yields benefits for individuals, businesses and the community at large.

The company also expressed optimism following the move and the value it would add to it and the economy of Kisumu.

Uber Eats GM, Kui Wangui said, “Our expansion into Kisumu is a key moment for us as we bring our unique offering of on-demand commerce, selection and affordable offering to the residents of Kisumu.

“Through Uber Eats, we seek to enhance the overall delivery experience and contribute to the local economy by supporting restaurants and retailers in Kisumu.

The move follows a report released in January that showed Uber Eats’ consumer data. According to the report, most Kenyans who use the service prefer African and American cuisine.

In addition, the report revealed that most customers ordered KFC Streetwise 2 and 3, followed by the Full Java House Breakfast.

Uber Eats has gained popularity since its inception in 2018, broadening its service offerings to include pharmaceuticals, liquor, groceries and sanitary items.

In another development, Uber Eats has inked a deal with long-term rival Instacart to expand its restaurant business.

Under the partnership, Instacart customers across the USA will be to use Instacart’s app to order from “hundreds of thousands of restaurants, powered by Uber Eats.”

Through the agreement, customers can also order groceries from Instacart’s more than 1,500 national, regional, and local retail banners.

Instacart+ members will have $0 delivery on groceries and restaurant orders over $35, the company added.

Dara Khosrowshahi, Uber’s CEO, said that partnership will help it expand its Uber Eats business, while also driving more business to its restaurant partners and couriers.

Meanwhile, Fidji Simo, Instacart’s CEO, said it will give its customers a convenient way to “tackle all their food needs from a single app.”
