USA – Poulterra has launched its Manure-as-a-Service (MaaS) platform, an innovative approach aimed at reducing emissions within the poultry supply chain while simultaneously cutting costs, enhancing operational performance, and setting new standards for sustainable poultry production.
The MaaS platform operates as a nature-based solution integrated into the existing poultry supply chain.
Central to Poulterra’s MaaS platform is miscanthus, a perennial grass used as bedding for poultry.
Miscanthus is a highly efficient, carbon-negative grass that can be cultivated on marginal soils.
Poulterra plants miscanthus on or near poultry farms and, when possible, along watersheds, where it acts as a buffer strip to reduce nutrient runoff.
The company supplies this miscanthus bedding to poultry growers through long-term contracts at no cost, in exchange for the previous year’s litter.
The collected miscanthus-based litter is then processed by Poulterra to produce renewable natural gas, liquid CO2, and high-quality, low-carbon fertilizers using anaerobic digestion technology.
This approach transforms poultry litter, traditionally spread as fertilizer prone to nitrogen volatilization and runoff, into nutrient-dense, precision-application fertilizers.
This transformation helps reduce the use of synthetic nitrogen fertilizers, increase soil carbon content, and lower Scope 3 emissions in animal feed and food production.
Phillip Plylar, CEO of Mountaire Farms, the fourth-largest poultry integrator in the United States, expresses enthusiasm for working with Poulterra.
He notes that Poulterra’s circular, nature-based platform enhances sustainability across the supply chain, reduces production costs, and makes poultry more sustainable for customers.
Rob Tripp, CEO of Poulterra, acknowledges Mountaire Farms as a progressive partner in sustainability efforts, focused on creating value for all stakeholders, including poultry growers and their communities.
Tripp emphasizes that Poulterra is developing a sustainable, circular economy model for poultry production at an unprecedented scale.
Poulterra, based in High Point, North Carolina, continues to lead in manufacturing sustainable poultry products, transforming the industry through its innovative MaaS platform.
