Serengeti Breweries Limited joins UN Global Compact, pledges to drive Sustainable Development Goals 

TANZANIA – Serengeti Breweries Limited (SBL) has officially become a member of the UN Global Compact (UNGCT), aligning itself with a prestigious group of global companies dedicated to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through robust sustainability programs. 

SBL, a leading brewery in Tanzania, has been actively involved in initiatives aimed at enhancing water supply, promoting positive drinking habits, fostering inclusion and diversity, and contributing to tree planting efforts.  

The company has committed to sustaining these programs until 2030, aligning with the United Nations’ target for SDG delivery. 

During the signing ceremony, Mr. Obinna Anyabelechi, the Managing Director of SBL, emphasized the company’s commitment to sustainability, stating, “Sustainability is a key priority for our business as we strive to create a positive impact in the lives of communities where we source, produce, live, and sell our products.” 

Under its ambitious 10-year sustainability action plan, named Society 2030 Spirit of Progress, SBL has undertaken various community programs nationwide. This includes 25 water projects benefiting approximately two million Tanzanians with access to clean and safe water.  

The company is also actively working to reduce water usage by 40 percent across its breweries in Moshi, Mwanza, and Dar es Salaam by 2030. 

Earlier, the brewer commissioned a water supply dam in Handeni District Tanga Region, Tanzania, which benefited over 2,000 local residents. During the ceremony, the company announced the completion of the company’s first WASH programme that aimed at empowering women to operate and manage water services. 

To support local farmers, SBL has implemented an agribusiness program involving over 400 farmers. These farmers are trained in regenerative agricultural practices, ensuring the sustainability of cereal sourcing.  

Additionally, the company has launched a scholarship program for bright students from farming communities, with over 230 students awarded scholarships since its inception three years ago. 

Marsha Macatta-Yambi, the Executive Director of UNGCT, commended SBL, stating that the brewery’s sustainability initiatives are “a bold demonstration of the role that the private sector should play to support the delivery of the SDGs.”
