Aldi to invest US$3.9B in British beef supply chain over five years

UK – Aldi has announced a significant investment of £3 billion (US$3.9B) in collaboration with British beef suppliers, extending over the next five years.

This commitment is part of the retailer’s broader strategy to support UK producers and uphold the quality of British beef.

Aldi aims for this investment to provide farmers with the confidence to plan ahead, ensuring stability within supply chains across the UK.

A key element of this plan includes a five-year contract with its supply partner Kepak, channeling £260 million (US$335M) into Aberdeen Angus beef production.

The retailer believes that this partnership will not only enhance the variety and quality of beef available to consumers but also strengthen its relationships with British farmers.

Julie Ashfield, managing director of buying at Aldi UK, emphasized the importance of UK farmers in the food supply chain, highlighting the retailer’s dedication to offering high-quality British products.

This announcement follows closely behind Lidl’s declaration at the end of July to invest £1.5 billion (US$ 1.93B) into the British beef industry, with a goal of sourcing 100% British beef over the next five years.

Aldi, which recently claimed the title of the UK’s largest retailer of British beef, despite being the fourth-largest supermarket chain, based this assertion on data from retail analysts Kantar.
