San-Ei Gen F.F.I. will launch two new natural blue colorants in the US market following FDA approval of its Gardenia (genipin) blue, effective August 29, 2025.

U.S.A. – San-Ei Gen F.F.I., a Japanese manufacturer of food additives, is preparing to launch two new natural blue colorants in the US following approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its Gardenia (genipin) blue.
The FDA ruling, effective August 29, 2025, allows Gardenia blue to be used as a color additive exempt from certification across a broad range of processed foods.
The new products, branded as San-Ei Blue (R) G-BF30 WSP and San-Ei Blue (R) G-BFA20 WSP, are designed for applications such as sports drinks, flavored waters, juice beverages, tea drinks, and both hard and soft candies.
The company says the formulations provide excellent heat and light stability compared with other natural blue colorants, making them particularly suited to processed foods that require long shelf lives.
Gardenia blue’s vivid hue can also be blended with yellow to create green tones or with red to produce purple shades, giving manufacturers flexible options for developing visually distinctive products.
This versatility addresses the rising demand for stable, plant-derived colorants that can withstand the rigors of food manufacturing and storage.
Yasuhiro Shimizu, president of San-Ei Gen F.F.I., said the approval represents a significant milestone in the company’s efforts to expand in the US.
“Our mission is to provide all people with healthy life and enjoyment of food through safe and secure food additives,” he said, noting that the company integrates advanced research in flavor, color, texture, taste and health functionality.
Founded in 1911, San-Ei Gen has grown into a global supplier of more than 20,000 food ingredients, ranging from natural colorants and flavors to antioxidants and other specialty additives.
Over 30% of its employees are dedicated to research and development, reflecting its commitment to innovation and production technology.
The company plans to actively promote its new Gardenia blue products in the US and continue investing in product development to meet consumer demand for natural, visually appealing ingredients.
The FDA approval is expected to strengthen San-Ei Gen’s position in a competitive market increasingly focused on clean-label solutions and alternatives to synthetic dyes.
