The vessels will initially operate via Safaga Port, a strategic gateway to Upper Egypt and the Golden Triangle mining region.

EGYPT – Egypt has established Canal Trust Ship Services Company, a new entity that will manage and operate specialized commercial vessels connecting Egyptian ports with East African countries.
The initiative aligns with President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s directives to deepen cooperation with African nations and enhance intra-African trade, with operations initially centered on Safaga Port before expanding to all Red Sea ports.
Comprehensive Logistics and Regulatory Coordination
The company will be responsible for managing specialized cargo vessels and providing a range of supporting logistics services. These include shipping agency operations, customs clearance for import and export cargo, and inland logistics activities such as transportation and warehousing.
In addition, Canal Trust Ship Services will coordinate with ports, customs authorities, veterinary agencies, and other regulatory bodies.
For fresh produce exporters and logistics operators, integrating customs clearance and inland transport under a single entity simplifies the movement of perishable cargo from Egyptian farms to East African consumers.
Strategic Vision for Intra-African Trade
The government views the project as part of its broader strategy to boost exports, access new markets, and expand economic relations with countries across the continent, particularly in East Africa.
Transport Minister Kamel El-Wazir emphasized that stronger connectivity with African countries, especially through transport networks, is essential to advancing regional integration and supporting sustainable economic development.
The vessels will initially operate via Safaga Port, a strategic gateway to Upper Egypt and the Golden Triangle mining region. Safaga’s location provides access to agricultural export zones, making it an ideal departure point for perishable cargo destined for East African markets.
Expansion Plans and Regional Impact
The company’s formation was approved at a constituent assembly meeting, where shareholders endorsed the articles of incorporation and bylaws, appointed the board of directors, and selected the auditor and legal adviser. Operations will eventually expand to include all locations along the Red Sea.
Canal Trust Ship Services addresses a critical gap in Egypt-East Africa trade: the absence of dedicated, coordinated maritime logistics.
This strategic initiative, supported by the national government, aims to boost regional trade, increase exports, and strengthen Egypt’s diplomatic and financial ties with its southern neighbours, while representing a significant investment in sustainable development through modernized transport infrastructure.
By facilitating more efficient shipping routes, Egypt seeks to increase exports and strengthen its diplomatic and financial ties with its southern neighbours.
