Panama Canal appoints Ilya Espino de Marotta as Administrator for 2026-2033 term

PANAMA – The Board of Directors of the Panama Canal Authority has appointed engineer Ilya Espino de Marotta as Administrator for the 2026-2033 term, following a national and international search focused on addressing water sustainability, route competitiveness, and operational efficiency.

The appointment follows a rigorous evaluation process of candidates’ knowledge, capabilities, leadership skills, and strategic vision.

Leadership Experience and Qualifications

Espino de Marotta holds a degree in Marine Engineering from Texas A&M University and a master’s degree in Economic Engineering from Universidad Santa María La Antigua.

She has more than 40 years of experience in technical, operational, and leadership roles, previously serving as Deputy Administrator and Chief Sustainability Officer.

Her work included leadership of the Panama Canal Expansion Program and projects related to water management, sustainability, and modernization.

Her prior success in managing the Expansion Program, which added the Neopanamax locks, demonstrates her ability to oversee large-scale infrastructure projects that directly affect the capacity of vessels for refrigerated cargo.

Strategic Challenges and Institutional Transition

The Board concluded that Espino de Marotta has the experience and capabilities required to lead the canal through challenges, including water sustainability, route competitiveness, institutional modernization, operational efficiency, and maintaining the canal’s contribution to national development.

José Ramón Icaza, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Panama Canal Authority, said: “The legitimacy of this decision rests on the independence of the process, the technical rigour of the methodology applied, and a serious, objective institutional deliberation focused on the best interests of the Canal and the country.”
