Peru secures Egyptian market access for blueberries, expanding reach to 76 global markets

The United States and the Netherlands remain dominant, while China declines as local production increases.

PERU – Peru has secured access to Egypt’s market for fresh blueberry exports, making Egypt the 76th international destination for Peruvian blueberries following successful phytosanitary negotiations.

The announcement was made in August 2026, opening access to a country with more than 120 million inhabitants.

Between January and June 2026, Peruvian exports of fresh blueberries totalled more than 61,000 tonnes for US$433 million, a year-on-year increase of 14% in volume and 23% in value.

A large share of the shipments was concentrated in the first months of the year, coinciding with the end of the 2025/26 campaign. Supply growth goes hand in hand with a larger cultivated area, with more than 3,000 new hectares bringing the planted area to about 27,000 hectares.

Alongside this, the expansion of early varieties such as Sekoya Pop and Ventura has increased fruit availability since the start of the new campaign. This effect was already evident in June shipments.

As a result, early-ripening varieties play a crucial role in Peru’s export success by extending the shipping season and enabling exporters to reach markets earlier.

The United States remained the main buyer, with 39,000 tons, representing a 37% increase in volume and a 58% increase in value. Peruvian fruit complements the country’s seasonal production and sustains year-round consumption.

The Netherlands, a logistics hub for other European markets, ranked second with 10,000 tons, recording 15% growth in volume and 58% in value.

Meanwhile, the United Kingdom was the third destination, with 4,000 tons, followed by Taiwan with 1,200 tons.

In contrast, China reduced its purchases from Peru by 24% in volume and 29% in value, as local production increases in both quantity and quality and consumers prefer sweeter blueberries.

On the other hand, emerging destinations such as Egypt offer new distribution opportunities, though their immediate impact on export volumes remains limited. The United States and the Netherlands remain dominant, while China declines as local production increases.

With 76 markets now open to Peruvian blueberries, the industry is well-positioned for continued growth and global leadership in the fresh berry trade. The combination of expanded cultivated area, early varieties, and new market access positions Peru for sustained growth in the international blueberry market

However, the industry’s ability to maintain quality standards and adapt to market conditions will determine its long-term success in an increasingly competitive global landscape.
