African Originals launches KO dry cider in Kenya

KO Dry Cider aims to attract beer consumers with its crisp, locally crafted appeal and bold design in Kenya’s evolving market.

KENYA – Kenyan beverage company African Originals has introduced KO Dry Cider, a new locally crafted cider available in 330ml bottles and 500ml cans.

The launch aims to capture a broader consumer base and challenge the dominance of mainstream beer in the Kenyan market.

KO Dry Cider is produced at African Originals’ cidery in Nairobi and marks the company’s first foray into the mainstream cider segment. The product is targeted at beer drinkers seeking a flavourful alternative, amid a shift in consumer preferences.

“KO Dry Cider is our first truly mainstream cider, crafted specifically to appeal to beer drinkers who are looking for something different,” said Alex Chappatte, Founder and CEO of African Originals.

“As the cider category grows and consumer tastes shift, we see a clear opportunity to challenge the dominance of beer with a locally made, flavour-forward alternative.”

According to company data, Kenya’s cider category has grown by over 200% in volume since 2020, while beer volumes recorded a compound annual growth rate of just 1% between 2018 and 2023. The shift presents a strong opportunity for brands like African Originals to expand their market share.

The new cider launch follows a series of strategic milestones for the company. In April 2025, African Originals became the first gin and cider manufacturer in Africa to receive B Corp certification, reflecting its focus on sustainability and social impact.

The same month, it also introduced Kenya’s first locally made ready-to-drink (RTD) gin and tonic product.

The company’s ciders have also gained a foothold in Uganda, reinforcing African Originals’ presence in the East African region. Its core audience includes both men and women aged 28 to 40, drawn to bold local flavours and lifestyle-oriented branding.

KO Dry Cider is now available in supermarkets, online platforms, liquor shops, bars, and beer gardens throughout Kenya.

Its packaging features recyclable materials, green apple imagery, and racetrack-inspired motifs, designed to evoke freshness, motion, and craftsmanship.
