Nestlé USA joins industry shift to remove FD&C colors

This effort is part of the company’s ongoing commitment to providing consumers with a range of high-quality, nutritious foods and beverages that cater to their diverse preferences.

U.S.A. – Nestlé, a multinational food and beverage manufacturer, has declared that it will eliminate FD&C colors in its United States (US) portfolio by mid-2026.

The company has been actively removing synthetic colors from its products and working to identify alternative solutions in recipes where they are still used, and is scheduled to complete this within the next 12 months.

This effort is part of the company’s ongoing commitment to providing consumers with a range of high-quality, nutritious foods and beverages that reflect their diverse choices.

“Consumers enjoy a wide variety of foods and beverages as part of their daily diet. They want choice and value shaped by a dynamic – and highly personal – combination of nutrition, quality, price and convenience,” said Marty Thompson, CEO of Nestlé USA.

Nestlé USA’s team of chefs and culinary experts crafts the company’s recipes with a keen focus on the quality of the ingredients used, adhering to strict standards.

“Whether it’s an easy and nutritious family meal, an occasional snack, or a satisfying cup of coffee, we are always looking for different ways to offer great-tasting, compelling choices for our consumers. As their diverse dietary preferences and nutritional needs evolve, we evolve with them,” he added.

Nestlé has refined its recipes over the years, expanding choices, incorporating nutrient-rich ingredients, adding more low and no-sugar options, and removing unfamiliar ingredients. The company also shares information to help consumers make informed decisions when choosing what to eat or drink.

“Serving and delighting people is at the heart of everything we do and every decision that we make. We have been doing so for over 100 years, and that longevity is built on an unwavering commitment to understanding our consumers, adapting to their evolving expectations, and meeting their immediate needs, but with a future-focused approach.” Mr. Thompson said.

Nestlé USA affirms its commitment to providing consumers with affordable, high-quality food and beverages.

Industry-wide shift

The company joins other major food manufacturers, including Kraft Heinz and General Mills, which have also pledged to remove artificial dyes from their product lines in response to growing consumer demand for cleaner labels and more transparent ingredient sourcing.

The announcement comes amid heightened public scrutiny of synthetic food additives. In Texas, Republican Governor Greg Abbott recently signed a bill requiring warning labels on products containing more than 40 dyes and additives starting in 2027, citing bans or restrictions in countries such as Australia, Canada, the EU, and the UK.

However, a closer examination reveals that several of these additives remain approved in those same regions or are already subject to regulation in the U.S.
