Additional investments target automation, efficiency and employee support

USA – Cargill opened an 81-unit apartment complex in Fort Morgan, Colorado, during the first week of December, completing a US$40 million employee housing project that also delivered 27 townhomes earlier in 2025.
The project was developed in partnership with Portmanteau, United Way of Morgan County, Project Moxie, the Morgan County Family Center, and the Riverside Housing initiative to address the region’s ongoing housing shortage.
The company noted that limited local housing has made recruitment harder for employers and settling more difficult for families in Morgan County.
To qualify for the new apartments, at least one tenant must be employed at the Fort Morgan plant, and units are offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
Johanna Hernandez, general manager of Cargill’s Fort Morgan facility, said nearly 60 percent of employees currently commute from outside the city, often traveling up to an hour each way, and the new housing is already reducing commuting pressures.
Support for community needs
In addition to housing, Cargill plans to provide more than US$500,000 in local grants for programs including expanded childcare and first-time homebuyer education, aiming to remove additional barriers for working families.
The housing initiative follows a June 2025 announcement that the company would invest nearly US$90 million in automation and new technology at the Fort Morgan beef plant as part of its Factory of the Future program.
These upgrades are designed to improve workplace safety and increase operational efficiency, adding to the US$24 million already invested in the site since 2021.
One of the key technologies is CarVe, a patent-pending computer vision system that supplies real-time yield data to frontline managers, helping workers improve cutting precision and reduce waste.
Leon Fletcher, vice president of operations for Cargill Beef, said small improvements in yield can translate into millions of additional meals amid tightening cattle supplies, with results varying by location.
Steve Rodriguez, fabrication floor manager who began his career on the processing line, described CarVe as a transformative tool that would have been valuable years ago.
