Danish Crown exceeds sales expectations with beef-vegetable blend

Over 2.5 million packs of minced beef mixed with vegetables sold in Denmark as consumers seek affordable and greener options.

DENMARK – Danish meat producer Danish Crown has sold more than 2.5 million packages of its minced beef blended with vegetables within the first year of launch, surpassing its initial market projections.

The product, marketed under the KOMBI-Hak line, hit store shelves on October 1 last year and has since reached sales of about 1,000 tons across Danish supermarkets.

This comes at a time when rising food prices, particularly beef, have prompted many consumers in Denmark to look for cost-effective alternatives to traditional minced meat.

Henning Sønnichsen, sales director at Danish Crown Beef, said the company was surprised by the strong demand, noting that Danish consumers are typically loyal to traditional ground beef.

However, he added that many shoppers appear to appreciate the new option, which offers both a lower price and a higher vegetable content without drastically changing the familiar taste or texture.

The blended mince is distributed through several retail chains, both under the Danish Crown label and as private brands, with REMA 1000 cited as a key retail partner in driving sales.

Retailer Support Drives Growth

At REMA 1000, category manager Jonas Garly Sørensen explained that the supermarket chain shifted around one-third of its marketing budget from conventional minced beef to the vegetable-infused version.

According to Sørensen, the decision was based on the product’s ability to maintain the flavor and consistency of regular minced meat while appealing to shoppers seeking affordable and nutritious meal options.

He added that the combination of familiar taste, competitive pricing, and targeted marketing efforts has been central to the product’s success in the Danish market.

Sønnichsen agreed that consumer repeat purchases have been a key factor, noting that sustained demand depends on taste satisfaction rather than short-term curiosity.

Expanding Beyond Retail

Building on the strong consumer response, Danish Crown has also introduced the KOMBI-Hak range to the food service sector, supplying restaurants, canteens, and institutional kitchens.

The company reports that early sales in these segments are showing steady growth, suggesting that the concept is gaining traction beyond household consumption.

As inflation continues to shape grocery spending habits, Danish Crown’s experience indicates a broader shift among Danish consumers toward products that balance taste, cost, and sustainability.

Prices for the KOMBI-Hak products remain below the average retail price of standard minced beef, which currently sells for about US$9.40 (DKK 65) per kilogram in Danish stores.
