White‑poultry, beef and milk costs fall; egg carton price climbs
EGYPT – Egypt’s basic food basket recently experienced several price shifts, with poultry and meat products becoming cheaper while eggs bucked the trend.
This is according to data released by the Information and Decision Support Centre.
The average retail price for white poultry in local markets eased to EGP 101.5 per kilogram (about US$1.96) after sliding by 0.6 % compared with the previous day, reflecting weakening demand and some gains in production output.
Beef prices also dipped by 0.6 %, to EGP 410.8 per kilogram (US$7.93), making it somewhat easier for households to budget for red meat alongside other proteins.
Seafood consumers saw a more marked adjustment as tilapia, one of the more commonly consumed fish species, fell by 3.4 % to EGP 83.8 per kilogram (US$1.62), a drop that could attract more buyers back into the fish market.
Dairy costs likewise moved lower with packaged milk now priced at EGP 42.6 per litre (US$0.82), a 3.8 % decrease on a daily basis that may ease pressure on family food budgets in urban and rural areas alike.
Eggs were the exception to the general downtrend as a carton of eggs rose by 1 % to EGP 143.2 (US$2.76), a gain that market analysts link to short‑term supply tightness in some governorates and shifting seasonal demand patterns tied to at‑home meal preparation.
Food vendors and consumers across Egypt have registered mixed reactions to the latest pricing snapshot, with lower costs on meats and dairy offering modest relief while rising egg prices continue to strain household budgets that remain sensitive to daily market fluctuations.
The IDSC’s update comes amid broader economic adjustments affecting commodity prices nationwide, and provides a timely reference point for shoppers, food retailers and policymakers tracking affordability trends in staple goods.
