Ferrara sees the launch as part of a broader shift towards textural snacking

U.S.A. – The Ferrara Candy Company is tapping into the growing demand for unique textural experiences with the launch of freeze-dried versions of three of its most iconic candies: SweeTARTS®, Lemonhead®, and Spree®.
The freeze-drying process removes moisture through sublimation, locking in flavor and delivering an ultra-light, crisp crunch that’s proving popular among adventurous snackers and social-media trendsetters.
Each crunchy bite delivers the same signature flavors, sweet-and-tart for SweeTARTS, bold, zesty lemon for Lemonhead, and fruity tang for Spree, while transforming the familiar chewy candies into light, airy treats.
Ferrara sees the launch as part of a broader shift toward “textural snacking,” which blends nostalgia with novelty.
“Freeze-Dried represents a space that consumers are very interested in, unlocking entirely new textures while honoring the authentic flavor profiles that make these brands beloved,” said Kiren Devereux, Director of Marketing for SweeTARTS.
The move comes amid rapid growth in the freeze-dried candy category. Valued at roughly US$1.2 billion in 2024, the segment is expected to more than double to US$2.4 billion by 2030, expanding at an estimated CAGR of nearly 9%.
Major players are already exploring the space: Mars Wrigley introduced Skittles Pop’d in both retail and TikTok Shop, while Hershey’s debuted Jolly Rancher Freeze-Dried earlier this year, signaling strong consumer appetite for crisp, airy confections with bold flavor.
Freeze-dried candy offers a distinct experience compared with traditional gummies or chews.
By stripping out water without heat damage, the process preserves color, aroma, and flavor intensity while producing a satisfying crunch.
This sensory novelty has made freeze-dried snacks a viral hit, especially among the younger generations, who are eager for playful, Instagram-worthy food moments.
Ferrara’s SweeTARTS Freeze Dried, Lemonhead Freeze Dried, and Spree Freeze Dried candies will hit U.S. shelves beginning in September, available in 4-ounce packs at retailers including Target and Walmart.
The portable size makes them ideal for road trips, movie nights, or keeping handy at work, anywhere a quick burst of flavor and crunch fits the moment.
With this launch, Ferrara is reimagining its heritage brands for a new generation, blending classic tastes with a modern, texture-driven twist, underscoring the company’s focus on innovation and its willingness to refresh time-honored favorites to meet today’s snacking trends.
