FS4Africa scales up partnerships to transform food safety in Africa

NIGERIA – Food Safety for Africa (FS4Africa), a 4-year Horizon EU project, has recently formalised collaborations with eight major initiatives, aiming to boost food safety, strengthen innovation, and enhance resilience across African food systems.

The momentum begins at the local level, where FS4Africa has partnered with three local governments in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria, to enhance food safety standards, strengthen local capacities, and raise public awareness. 

By combining international expertise with regional leadership, the project aims to transform food systems and create impactful, sustainable solutions for food safety issues that affect public health and economic stability.

On the international front, FS4Africa is scaling up innovation through strategic alliances with several EU-funded projects. 

Smart Droplets, an EU-funded initiative pioneering advanced tools such as AI, sensors, and digital twins to improve eco-friendly crop management, is working alongside FS4Africa to enhance food safety, boost productivity, and promote sustainable agricultural practices by empowering local farmers and facilitating knowledge exchange..

The collaboration with FCI4Africa builds on this momentum, bringing together shared priorities around food safety, sustainability, and fair trade.

Anchored by the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), the partnership aims to harmonize standards, advance open science, and foster innovation across African food systems.

Complementing these efforts, FS4Africa is also joining forces with INCiTiS-FOOD, HealthyDiets4Africa, and UP-RISE to advance an integrated approach to food safety, nutrition, and governance across Africa.

Together, these collaborations are driving innovation and research to strengthen informal markets, improve diet quality, and scale practical solutions that benefit both communities and industries. 

By combining FS4Africa’s expertise in food safety with INCiTiS-FOOD’s focus on nutrition security, HealthyDiets4Africa’s work on safe and diverse diets, and UP-RISE’s leadership in food governance, the partnerships are setting a new standard for resilient and inclusive food systems.

Collectively, they are working to ensure that African food systems are not only safer and more productive but also better equipped to meet the nutritional needs and challenges of the future.

The agreement with FrontAg Nexus strengthens FS4Africa’s resilience-oriented agenda by promoting climate-smart solutions like hydroponics, aquaponics, insect farming, and sustainable resource management, to improve food security & regional trade across African markets. 

This is to promote sustainable water, soil, and energy management, particularly in regions facing environmental and socio-economic challenges.

FS4Africa’s work with VODAN Africa & Asia, and WATSON will further foster equitable data sharing and sustainable digital infrastructures, as well as improve traceability and combat food fraud, from local markets in Africa to global supply chains, respectively. 

These collaborations reflect FS4Africa’s commitment to forging purposeful alliances that contribute to safer, more inclusive, and more resilient food systems across Africa and beyond.

They align with the organization’s mission to strengthen African food safety systems, with particular focus on the informal sector, by driving local market transformation, enhancing food security and regional trade, and reducing negative impacts on the environment, biodiversity, public health, and society.
