Kakuzi embraces AI, drones, data analytics to boost macadamia quality, farm resilience

The company’s Ag-Tech strategy focuses on sustainability initiatives and resilient agronomy practices embedded across all operations.

KENYA – Kenyan agricultural firm Kakuzi Plc has modernised its operations by integrating advanced agricultural technology to combat climate change challenges, including artificial intelligence, machine learning, and drone surveillance.

Under the leadership of Managing Director Chris Flowers, the company has established a dedicated Digital Agricultural Transformation Department to oversee these innovations. “The Kakuzi Ag-Tech journey is firmly on course and is anchored on several sustainability initiatives and resilient agronomy practices that we continue to embed across all operations,” Flowers said.

“As we face more and more uncertainty and unpredictability in our traditional climatic patterns, it is essential that agriculture adapts and adopts new technology,” he added. The strategy involves utilising AI, machine learning, and data analytics to refine decision-making and boost production quality.

For instance, key practical applications already in use include an AI-powered Intelligent Optical Sorting system at the Kakuzi Macadamia Processing Plant. This system automates macadamia nut grading to boost production quality by ensuring consistent sizing and quality standards, reducing waste, and improving export-grade yields.

In addition, the firm is also deploying the latest Ag-Tech technology in the fields alongside enhanced drone security surveillance systems. Drones are used for field surveillance, monitoring crop health, detecting pest infestations, and assessing irrigation needs. Data analytics processes information from these sources to inform planting decisions, resource allocation, and harvest timing.

Ag-Tech supports Kakuzi’s climate-smart agriculture goals by enabling precision farming that optimises resource use and reduces water and fertiliser waste. It improves resilience to unpredictable weather through better monitoring and adaptive management. The technology also enhances decision-making with real-time data on crop conditions and environmental factors.

These initiatives represent a shift toward climate-smart farming practices that prioritise long-term environmental and operational resilience. By embracing high-tech solutions, the organisation aims to maintain efficiency despite increasingly unpredictable global weather patterns. The company’s Ag-Tech strategy focuses on sustainability initiatives and resilient agronomy practices embedded across all operations.

Moreover, Kakuzi’s investment in digital transformation shows how Kenyan agribusinesses are leveraging technology to stay competitive in global markets. The integration of AI and data analytics represents a significant step toward modernising the country’s agricultural sector, positioning Kakuzi as a leader in technology-driven farming in East Africa.

Lastly, as climate change continues to threaten traditional farming practices, adopting such technology becomes increasingly essential for long-term agricultural sustainability and food security.
