KTDA’S Chai Trading Company unveils five-year strategic plan

The strategy includes completing the Miritini Mega Warehouse Complex in 2027 and expanding tea trading into new markets to improve operational efficiency and farmer dividends.

KENYA – Chai Trading Company Limited (CTCL), a subsidiary of Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA) Holdings, has launched a five-year strategic plan to reduce tea warehousing costs, expand trading opportunities and increase returns to farmers supplying KTDA-managed factories.

The strategy focuses on investments in technology and infrastructure to improve the efficiency of tea storage and trading operations while maximising dividends for tea farmers.

A key component of the plan is the completion of the Mega Warehouse Complex in Miritini, Mombasa, in 2027, the first year of the five-year strategy. The facility is expected to provide centralised storage for nearly all tea produced by KTDA-managed factories and significantly reduce warehousing expenses.

In a statement on Sunday, 18 October 2026, KTDA Holdings said the initiative was designed to deliver greater value to farmers through more efficient and cost-effective operations.

“Chai Trading Company Ltd (CTCL) has launched a five-year strategic plan aimed at delivering greater value to tea farmers through more efficient, cost-effective and sustainable warehousing and trading operations,” KTDA stated.

“The plan prioritises investment in technology and infrastructure to enhance business growth and maximise returns to farmers through dividends and lower tea warehousing costs.”

The Miritini warehouse is expected to improve tea handling and storage efficiency, streamline operations and reduce expenses associated with warehousing. The anticipated cost savings are intended to support improved returns from tea sales and strengthen the company’s ability to generate dividends for farmers.

Beyond infrastructure development, CTCL plans to expand its tea trading business and diversify into new markets. The strategy includes broadening its customer base and extending product reach to create additional trading opportunities.

The expansion forms part of KTDA Holdings’ wider efforts to secure better value for tea farmers amid increasing competition in international tea markets.

“The plan also aims to grow CTCL’s trading arm to diversify to new markets as part of the Group’s wider plan to broaden the customer and product reach for better value for the farmer,” KTDA stated.

Technology investments will also support more efficient warehousing and trading processes, while the emphasis on sustainable operations is intended to underpin CTCL’s long-term business growth.

Through the five-year plan, the company aims to strengthen its trading activities, lower operating costs and improve the financial benefits delivered to farmers affiliated with KTDA-managed tea factories.
