Melitta Professional unveils M-Lab in New Jersey, blending research, pilot roasting, and education to advance coffee industry innovation.

USA – Melitta Professional has launched a new coffee innovation lab at its North America roasting facility in New Jersey, United States, aimed at inspiring the next generation of coffee discovery through collaboration, creativity, and education.
The new M-Lab spans 3,000 square feet and features a pilot roasting and packaging area of approximately 1,000 square feet. According to the company, the initiative is designed to reinforce Melitta’s position in the coffee industry while offering partners a collaborative platform for expansion.
The facility is built to support coffee companies seeking to grow “seed to cup” partnerships, covering sourcing, blend development, packaging, and distribution with the backing of Melitta’s expert team.
Acting as both a hybrid research and development space and a business incubator, the lab enables hands-on product development and accelerated pilot roasting.
Key features of the M-Lab include a pilot production area equipped with a 60-kilogram Probat roaster and an accompanying packaging space, enabling partners to develop and refine coffee products. Melitta Professional said the space would foster creativity and strengthen industry collaboration.
Founded in 1908 by Melitta Bentz, credited with inventing the paper coffee filter and drip brewing system, the company now operates in more than 90 countries and offers a broad portfolio of coffee machines, filters, and beverage products.
In addition to its innovation initiatives, Melitta Group recently announced a five-year partnership with Spanish football club Real Madrid, supplying coffee machines, coffee, and service.
More than 60 professional XT6 fully automatic coffee machines and 150 Barista TS machines will be installed across VIP and general spectator areas at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium.
Melitta Group maintains a diverse sports sponsorship portfolio, including partnerships with Borussia Dortmund, Arminia Bielefeld, Minas Tênis Clube in Brazil, and various German sports clubs.
In May last year, the company also acquired a majority stake in South African roaster Caturra, based in Cape Town, whose products are sold across retail and hospitality channels.
With the opening of the M-Lab, Melitta Professional aims to advance its legacy of innovation and strengthen its collaborative footprint in the North American coffee sector.
