Kenyan meat processor signs supply agreements with Gulf supermarket chains and Kinshasa retailers

KENYA – Quality Meat Packers (QMP), a privately owned Kenyan meat processor, is widening its export markets by supplying products to the Gulf states and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
The company has signed agreements with Lulu Hypermarket and Nesto Group in the Gulf region, as well as with Kin Marché supermarkets in eastern DRC.
These partnerships will give the firm access to distribution networks in the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, and Bahrain, while also opening a route into Kinshasa, which has a population of more than 15 million people.
According to Managing Director Diamond Velji, working with Lulu and Nesto provides visibility in large shopping outlets while also reaching ordinary households across the Gulf.
Velji said the entry into DRC through Kin Marché complements the Gulf deals by enabling the firm to target one of Africa’s fastest-growing urban consumer markets.
He added that the strategy combines regional and international expansion, positioning the Kenyan company to compete for a wider share of household spending.
Food import dependency in the Gulf states is estimated at about 85 percent annually, making the region an attractive market for suppliers of halal and ready-to-eat foods.
Lulu operates more than 250 outlets while Nesto runs over 130 stores, both serving millions of shoppers every week across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).
Velji noted that QMP previously exported mainly raw meat cuts to the Middle East, catering to a niche segment of buyers.
The new arrangements, however, allow the company to diversify its offering to include halal-certified beef, lamb, mutton, and chicken, along with processed items such as cubes and samosas.
The firm supplies airlines, hotels, and restaurants, but the latest focus is on retail consumers who are becoming more conscious about quality and convenience.
Velji explained that shoppers in both the Gulf and DRC increasingly demand halal assurance, premium standards, and ready-to-cook options that save time.
He said the expanded product line is designed to reflect these shifts in consumer expectations while strengthening the company’s presence in export markets.
QMP sees the partnerships as part of a long-term plan to build recognition for Kenyan-processed meat beyond traditional export destinations.
