Welsh lamb products enter UK retail as British pork sector publishes 2030 environmental plan
UK pig industry reports 18% drop in carbon footprint between 2008 and 2023
WALES – Protected Geographical Indication Welsh Lamb and Welsh Beef products produced by Edwards The Welsh Butcher have been introduced to supermarket shelves in the United Kingdom through new retail agreements with Tesco and Ocado.
The latest additions to the company’s range include PGI Welsh Lamb and Apricot Burgers, PGI Welsh Lamb Kofta Kebabs and sliced PGI Welsh Beef Topside, with Tesco stores in Wales stocking selected products while Ocado has listed several lamb-based items for customers across Great Britain.
In addition, Ocado’s online platform is offering PGI Welsh Lamb and Rosemary Sausages alongside PGI Welsh Lamb Merguez Sausages as part of the expanded retail distribution of Welsh meat products.
Simon James, managing director at Edwards The Welsh Butcher, said the agreements with Tesco and Ocado reflected consumer demand for PGI Welsh Lamb and PGI Welsh Beef products in different parts of the UK market.
Meanwhile, Hybu Cig Cymru said the wider availability of the products could introduce more households in Wales and other regions to Welsh Lamb and Welsh Beef.
The developments come after Hybu Cig Cymru launched its strategic action plan in March 2026, which aims to increase the number of branded Welsh Lamb and Welsh Beef products available throughout the UK retail sector.
British Pork Industry Releases Sustainability Roadmap
At the same time, the British pork sector has published a new Environmental Roadmap covering the 2026 to 2030 period, setting out targets linked to emissions, waste management and farm efficiency.
The roadmap, supported by AHDB, states that the UK pig industry reduced its carbon footprint by 18% between 2008 and 2023 while emissions associated with land use and land-use change declined by 71%.
According to the industry plan, the reductions were linked to changes in feed composition, improved feed efficiency and the adoption of production technologies throughout the supply chain.
The strategy identifies seven areas for further work over the next five years, including carbon reduction, air quality, water use, nutrient and slurry management, biodiversity, recycling and energy consumption on farms.
Furthermore, the roadmap introduces reviews every five years using life cycle assessments in an effort to monitor environmental performance and measure progress against future sustainability targets.
