UAE’s Al Khaleej Sugar to build renewable-powered sugar plant in Kazakhstan
The planned facility in Kazakhstan aims to boost local sugar production, address water supply issues, and promote energy self-sufficiency.
KAZAKHSTAN – Al Khaleej Sugar, one of the world’s largest sugar producers, has announced plans to establish a sugar plant in Kazakhstan’s Almaty Region.
The initiative was discussed in a recent meeting between Almaty Region Governor Marat Sultangaziyev and Sheikh Jamal Al Ghurair, Managing Director of the Dubai-based company.
The project aims to tap into Kazakhstan’s agricultural potential and contribute to reversing the country’s declining domestic sugar production.
Kazakhstan has reported consecutive annual declines, with sugar output falling by 31.1% in 2023 and another 17.6% in 2024. Currently, imported sugar accounts for 72.4% of the country’s market.
Discussions between the two parties focused on potential sites for the facility, areas suitable for sugar beet cultivation, and existing water supply challenges. A location near the town of Konayev was identified as the most favorable due to logistical advantages.
However, concerns remain about irrigation, prompting plans to bring in hydrology experts to develop sustainable water solutions.
“It is critical for us that the cultivated areas are reliably supplied with water,” said Sheikh Al Ghurair. “We will attract the best consultants in the field of hydrology.”
To support the plant’s operations, investors are also exploring the construction of wind power facilities, with the goal of making the project energy self-sufficient.
“We want to create a fully autonomous enterprise using renewable energy sources,” Al Ghurair added.
Governor Sultangaziyev emphasized the significance of integrating advanced technologies and partnering with experienced stakeholders to ensure the project’s success.
A formal agreement was reached to engage professional consultants for a comprehensive analysis of the region’s hydrological resources.
Al Khaleej Sugar currently operates the world’s largest autonomous sugar refinery in Jebel Ali, Dubai, with a daily production capacity of 6,000 tons and approximately 800 employees.
