Spain reports two new Newcastle disease outbreaks affecting 52,000 broilers

More than 30 poultry flocks have been affected since the country’s outbreak began in December 2025.

SPAIN – Spain has reported two new outbreaks of Newcastle disease in commercial broiler flocks, with 52,000 birds affected as authorities continue efforts to contain the virus across the country’s poultry sector.

The latest update from the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) shows that the disease was confirmed in two commercial broiler operations located in Peñaranda de Bracamonte and San Pedro del Arroyo.

The larger of the two affected farms, located in Peñaranda de Bracamonte, housed 29,000 broilers, while the second farm in San Pedro del Arroyo had a flock of 23,000 birds.

Veterinary authorities have introduced a range of disease control measures, including the culling of affected flocks, the establishment of restriction zones, surveillance inside and outside the affected areas, traceability investigations, disinfection procedures and the official disposal of carcasses, animal byproducts and waste.

Outbreaks continue after resurgence

Spain has been managing recurring Newcastle disease outbreaks since December 2025, with more than 30 poultry flocks infected since the virus re-emerged.

Before the current wave of infections, the country had remained free of Newcastle disease since 2022.

WOAH continues to list active Newcastle disease notifications from several other countries, including Poland, Singapore, Israel, Germany, Malaysia, Peru and Burkina Faso.

However, none of those countries has submitted updated Newcastle disease reports during July.

Earlier this month, WOAH confirmed that the Newcastle disease outbreak in Lesotho had been officially resolved, leaving Spain among the countries still responding to active infections in commercial poultry flocks.
