Namibia’s Meatco secures additional Norwegian beef export quota worth about US$5.5M
Total Norwegian beef exports are projected to generate about US$20.1 million this year.
NAMIBIA – The Meat Corporation of Namibia (Meatco) has obtained an additional 344,766kg Norwegian beef export quota after exhausting its original 2026 allocation by the end of June, reaching the limit five months earlier than it did in 2025.
The company said the initial quota is expected to generate approximately US$14.6 million in premium export revenue, reflecting continued demand for Namibian beef in the Norwegian market.
According to Meatco, the additional quota was secured through a government-to-government agreement with Botswana under the Southern African Customs Union and European Free Trade Association (SACU EFTA) quota sharing framework after Botswana did not fully utilise part of its allocation.
The extra 344,766kg allocation is expected to contribute a further US$5.5 million in export earnings, bringing the projected value of Meatco’s Norwegian beef exports for 2026 to about US$20.1 million.
The company explained that the Norwegian beef quota is divided between Meatco and Beefcor, with Meatco receiving 75% of the allocation and Beefcor accounting for the remaining 25%.
Following the full utilisation of Meatco’s original allocation, the governments of Namibia and Botswana concluded an agreement allowing Namibia to access part of Botswana’s unused Norwegian beef quota before the end of the year.
Interim Chief Executive Officer Ambassador Albertus Aochamub said using the full Norwegian quota by the end of June reflects growing international demand for premium Namibian beef and demonstrates the company’s improving commercial performance.
Aochamub said the arrangement between Namibia and Botswana provides an opportunity to increase exports to an important market, adding that Meatco intends to fully utilise the additional quota before 31 December 2026.
He also thanked the governments of Namibia and Botswana, Namibia’s Ministry of International Relations and Trade, and the Botswana Meat Commission for their role in facilitating the additional export allocation, which will allow the company to expand shipments during the remainder of the year.
