Egypt poultry, egg prices fall as production surplus hits market

Egg production reaches 16.62 billion units, pushing prices lower across markets.

EGYPT – Egypt’s poultry and table egg markets have recorded a clear decline in prices, driven by a sharp increase in domestic production that has created a supply surplus across the sector.

Industry estimates show poultry production rose by around 20–25% compared with the previous year, increasing availability in local markets and easing earlier supply constraints.

The price drop is being attributed primarily to oversupply rather than weaker consumer demand.

Egg production reached approximately 16.62 billion units in 2024, including about 14.01 billion table eggs for consumption, with the remainder allocated to hatcheries.

The scale of output has contributed to an estimated 25% surplus, reinforcing downward pressure on retail and wholesale egg prices.

Poultry slaughter activity also remained strong, with nearly 1.99 billion birds processed nationwide during 2024, reflecting a highly active production system supported by both commercial and rural farming operations.

Supply surplus exceeds self-sufficiency needs

Total poultry meat output reached about 2.5 million tonnes in 2024, with specialised farms accounting for the majority of production at roughly 2.09 million tonnes.

Industry data suggests domestic production now exceeds self-sufficiency requirements by around 30% for poultry and about 25% for eggs, creating sustained market oversupply.

Hatchery operations further supported expansion, with 547 facilities producing more than 1.13 billion chicks from approximately 1.37 billion hatching eggs, achieving an 82.1% hatchability rate.

Market adjustment benefits consumers

The imbalance between rising production and steady demand has led to price corrections in both poultry meat and eggs.

Analysts note that while the surplus is putting pressure on producers, it has improved affordability for consumers in local markets, with supply conditions expected to remain a key driver of near-term pricing trends.
