FAO to inaugurate global food, agriculture Museum in Rome

Guided by FAO’s Four Betters, Better Production, Better Nutrition, a Better Environment, and a Better Life, the museum aligns with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

ITALY – The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is set to inaugurate its new Food and Agriculture Museum & Network (FAO MuNe) on 16 October 2025, coinciding with World Food Day and FAO’s 80th anniversary.

Supported by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the museum will be officially opened by FAO Director-General QU Dongyu alongside Italian President Sergio Mattarella.

Located near Rome’s Circus Maximus and the Colosseum, FAO MuNe is designed as a hub for cultural exchange, learning, and innovation.

It also integrates the historic David Lubin Memorial Library, symbolizing FAO’s deep-rooted commitment to sharing agricultural knowledge and advancing food systems globally.

Spanning 1,300 square meters across 12 rooms, FAO MuNe offers an immersive journey through 80 years of FAO’s work.

Exhibits include archival treasures, historic documents, and rare photographs that trace the evolution of food systems and the Organization’s impact on global nutrition, sustainability, and development.

The museum blends history, knowledge, art, and science to highlight food and agriculture as shared human heritage.

At the heart of FAO MuNe lies an international art collection of over 60 pieces donated by around 40 FAO Member States.

Each artwork reflects the identity, landscape, and people of its contributing nation.

Highlights include Michelangelo Pistoletto’s “Cultivating the Third Paradise,” which explores the harmony between nature, society, and technology, and Pablo Atchugarry’s “Peace with Nature,” featuring a century-old olive tree representing humanity’s reconciliation with the environment.

Together, these works create a global dialogue celebrating cultural diversity and unity through art.

FAO MuNe also features the FoodS Lab, a fully equipped “kitchen of the world” for cooking demonstrations, workshops, and expert talks.

Here, visitors can explore food heritage, innovation, and sustainability firsthand. Interactive digital tools encourage audiences to envision the future of farming and nutrition, reinforcing FAO’s educational and participatory mission.

Guided by FAO’s Four Betters, Better Production, Better Nutrition, a Better Environment, and a Better Life, the museum aligns with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

FAO MuNe officially opens to the public on 20 October 2025, welcoming visitors from Monday to Saturday at Viale delle Terme di Caracalla, Rome.
