Ferrero expands into premium breakfast foods with Purely Elizabeth acquisition

Confectionery giant strengthens its breakfast portfolio as demand grows for premium cereals and nutrient-rich ingredients.

USA – Ferrero is expanding its presence in the better-for-you food market with the acquisition of US-based breakfast brand Purely Elizabeth, adding granola and cereal products to a portfolio increasingly focused on changing consumer preferences around health, nutrition and wellbeing.

Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Founded in 2009 and headquartered in Boulder, Colorado, Purely Elizabeth has built a position in the premium breakfast category with products featuring ingredients including oats, whole grains, nuts and seeds.

The company has reportedly doubled its sales over the past two years, highlighting continued demand for premium and nutrition-focused breakfast products.

The acquisition represents another step in Ferrero’s strategy to diversify beyond its traditional confectionery portfolio and build a stronger presence in high-growth food categories.

“Purely Elizabeth, with its terrific portfolio of quality, tasty products, is a great addition to Ferrero,” said Giovanni Ferrero, President of Ferrero International S.A., the holding company of the Ferrero Group.

“With this transaction, Ferrero builds on its recent acquisition of WK Kellogg Co, reinforcing both its presence at breakfast time in America and its reach in the better-for-you segment,” he added.

The deal gives Ferrero access to a category where consumers are increasingly looking for products combining convenience with recognisable ingredients and nutritional attributes.

Breakfast becomes strategic growth area

The acquisition follows Ferrero’s purchase of WK Kellogg Co, further strengthening the group’s position in the North American breakfast market.

Lapo Civiletti, President of Ferrero Ice Cream and WK Kellogg Co, said Purely Elizabeth complements the company’s existing portfolio and reflects its strategy of investing in high-growth categories.

“Purely Elizabeth has built a distinctive brand by being in tune with evolving consumer preferences through premium, innovative and delicious products,” Civiletti said.

The emphasis on oats, whole grains, nuts and seeds also places ingredient innovation at the centre of the brand’s proposition.

These ingredients are increasingly important across the better-for-you category as manufacturers respond to demand for fibre, plant-based nutrition and less highly processed formulations.

For the wider food ingredients industry, Ferrero’s move highlights the growing commercial opportunity around whole grains, seeds, nuts, plant-based ingredients and functional nutrition.

Breakfast products have become an important platform for ingredient innovation, allowing manufacturers to combine familiar formats with added nutritional benefits.

Granola, cereals and snackable breakfast products can also provide opportunities for ingredient suppliers developing high-protein, high-fibre and nutrient-dense formulations.

Ferrero has previously highlighted health and wellbeing as an increasingly important area of consumer purchasing behaviour, including through its participation in industry discussions around innovation and nutrition.

With Purely Elizabeth joining WK Kellogg Co within its portfolio, Ferrero is positioning itself to capture more of this evolving demand while retaining the entrepreneurial identity of the acquired brand.
