GNT launches algae-based Exberry Carotenes for natural yellow food coloring

The new coloring solutions can be used in confectionery, snacks, baked goods, cheese, sauces, ice cream, yogurt, margarine, and other products.

THE NETHERLANDS – GNT Group has unveiled its new algae-based Exberry Carotenes, designed to provide natural yellow shades across a wide range of food and beverage applications.

Available in liquid, powder, and oil-soluble formats, the ingredients promise vibrant, stable coloring that does not alter the taste or smell of the final product.

The carotenes are derived from Dunaliella salina, a microalga known for its high beta-carotene content, and processed using essential oils.

This sets them apart from nature-identical carotenes, which are typically produced from petrochemicals.

With their high stability and efficiency at low dosages, the Exberry Carotenes are positioned as a cost-effective solution for manufacturers seeking clean-label color alternatives.

According to GNT, the new coloring solutions can be used in confectionery, snacks, baked goods, cheese, sauces, ice cream, yogurt, margarine, and other products.

They can also be declared in multiple ways depending on regional regulations, including “Colour: Algal carotenes” in the EU, “Beta-carotene (colour)” in the US, and “Colour: Beta-carotenes” under Codex Alimentarius standards.

Frank Engel, product manager at GNT Group, said the innovation addresses a common industry challenge. “Carotenes offer a natural way to achieve vibrant shades while supporting natural ingredient declarations, but finding the right option can be challenging. Our Exberry algal carotenes offer a consumer-friendly option that delivers strong performance.”

Sustainability is another key advantage of the launch. The cultivation of algae does not require agricultural land, avoids biodiversity impacts, and eliminates the need for pesticides.

Additionally, algae growth acts as a carbon sink, further enhancing its environmental profile.

GNT emphasized that the production process carries no health and safety risks, with semi-automation reducing physical demands on workers.

Ruther de Kort, sustainability manager at GNT, noted, “When it comes to sustainability, algal carotenes are an exceptional choice. They allow manufacturers to achieve the shades they need while helping to keep their products’ carbon footprint low.”

This latest introduction follows another launch earlier this year, when GNT expanded its EXBERRY® Organics portfolio with a new pink shade developed for use in a wide variety of food and beverage products.

The addition reinforced the company’s strategy to provide vibrant, plant-based colors that support natural labeling and consumer trust.

GNT will also showcase its broader Exberry portfolio at the International Baking Industry Exposition (IBIE) 2025 in Las Vegas from September 13 to 17.

Visitors will be able to sample rainbow concha cookies made with EXBERRY colors, showcasing how natural solutions can deliver cultural relevance and strong visual appeal while meeting clean-label demands.
