Innophos launches VersaCal® Bright as clean-label alternative to titanium dioxide

VersaCal® Bright is now permitted in donut sugar, sugar for coated candies, white candy melts, and ready-to-eat chicken products.

U.S.A. – Innophos, a leading innovator in specialty phosphates, has introduced VersaCal® Bright, a clean-label solution that replicates the whiteness and brightness of titanium dioxide (TiO₂), while offering added nutritional benefits.

This new science-backed ingredient contains essential minerals, calcium and phosphorus, supporting the growing demand for simpler, safer food ingredients.

This launch follows the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s recent approval of Innophos’ petition to use calcium phosphate as a safe color additive in specific food categories, marking a significant regulatory milestone for food manufacturers.

VersaCal® Bright is now permitted in donut sugar, sugar for coated candies, white candy melts, and ready-to-eat chicken products, key applications where TiO₂ has traditionally been used for its bright white appearance.

Titanium dioxide regulatory controversy

Although the FDA continues to permit titanium dioxide within specified limits, scientific and regulatory discourse surrounding its safety has intensified.

The European Union banned TiO₂ in food in 2022, citing studies that linked it to potential genotoxicity, intestinal lesions, and immune system toxicity. The U.S., while not yet following suit, faces growing scrutiny from researchers and advocacy groups.

Adding to the body of concern, new peer-reviewed research published in 2025 has drawn attention to the endocrine-disrupting potential of titanium dioxide, particularly in nanoparticle form.

The study, led by Jiaxing Nanhu University in China, found that TiO₂ nanoparticles may interfere with hormonal responses to food, disrupt blood sugar regulation, and contribute to metabolic disorders, including diabetes and obesity.

“Our research highlights the detrimental effects of titanium dioxide nanoparticles as potential intestinal endocrine disruptors,” the study’s authors noted, underscoring an urgent need for safer substitutes.

Forward-looking alternative

In response to industry and consumer demand, Erhan Yildiz, Senior Product Development Manager at Innophos, assures that VersaCal Bright offers manufacturers a practical, science-backed solution that meets both visual and clean-label demands.

He explained that the product offers an effective alternative to titanium dioxide while helping brands strengthen their labels with calcium and phosphorus content. “It’s a smart way to align with consumer expectations for simpler, safer ingredients while getting ahead of potential future regulatory changes.”

With the recent approval, Innophos is uniquely positioned to help food manufacturers reformulate their products and maintain the trusted visual quality that consumers expect.
