JBT Marel launches efficient agitation retort to boost food packaging performance, sustainability

New thermal processing technology reduces cycle time and energy use while enhancing food quality for diverse packaging formats.

USA – Global technology provider JBT Marel has introduced its latest thermal processing innovation, the Efficient Agitation (EA) Retort, designed to meet the evolving needs of the food and beverage packaging sector.

The new system is engineered to optimize preservation for a range of challenging container types, including pouches, tubs, cups, glass, and other retortable formats.

Unlike traditional steam water spray (SWS) static retorts, the EA Retort features a patented trapezoidal motion profile.

This unique design delivers higher mixing energy with a shorter stroke length during sterilisation while preserving the even heating benefits of the SWS system. The result is more sustainable and flexible packaging with reduced brine use and shorter cycle times.

The EA Retort’s linear agitation capability significantly reduces processing time—by up to 30% and 34% compared to static heat sterilisation. This increased throughput can lower the number of machines required on the production line and ensure products maintain better freshness and quality after preservation.

Additionally, the EA Retort offers customisable agitation profiles tailored to different product requirements. Reduced G-force settings are available for delicate items, while recipe-driven profiles can accommodate varying stages of the preservation cycle.

According to JBT Marel product line manager Breno Dos Santos, the EA Retort reflects the company’s commitment to advancing packaging technology while addressing environmental concerns.

“The EA Retort offers an unparalleled combination of benefits that decrease production time and shipping costs, significantly reduce production times and increase sustainability,” said Dos Santos.

This launch follows the recent release of Proseal’s XTP Automatic Tray Sealer in June. Also part of JBT Marel, Proseal’s system targets mid-sized producers and offers sealing speeds of up to 40 packages per minute, or 30 with Modified Atmosphere Packaging.
