Langeberg Foods resumes operations under new ownership following Tiger Foods’ exit

The relaunch marks a major milestone in safeguarding jobs, exports, and community development in the Western Cape region.

SOUTH AFRICA – Langeberg Foods (Pty) Ltd has officially resumed operations at its Ashton-based facility following the completion of the sale of the Langeberg & Ashton Foods business, previously owned by Tiger Consumer Brands Limited.

The reopening represents a crucial milestone in a multi-year effort to ensure the long-term sustainability of both the factory and South Africa’s deciduous fruit industry.

Tiger Brands first announced its plan to exit the segment in May 2020, prompting a lengthy process to identify a suitable ownership model capable of preserving jobs and local production.

The new ownership structure of Langeberg Foods unites key partners with a shared vision for agricultural and economic growth.

Norfund, the Norwegian development finance institution, is one of the principal shareholders, joined by the Ashton Fruit Producers Agricultural Co-Operative (AFPAC), which represents more than 100 fruit growers from across the Western Cape.

In a move to ensure inclusive participation, the Langeberg Community Trust, funded with R150 million from Tiger Brands, will hold a 10% stake in the business.

The Trust will channel dividends and benefits directly into the Ashton community, supporting socio-economic initiatives and improving livelihoods across the broader Langeberg region.

Pindie Nyandoro, Norfund’s Regional Director for Southern Africa, described the investment as a valuable opportunity to secure local employment and expand ownership in a business with substantial growth potential.

The Ashton factory remains a key pillar of the Breede River Valley economy, employing more than 3,000 permanent and seasonal workers. With over 80% of its canned fruit and puree products exported, the facility continues to play a major role in South Africa’s agro-processing and export sectors.

Tiger Brands CEO Tjaart Kruger said the conclusion of the transaction brings to a close a five-year effort to secure a sustainable future for the operation.

He added that the new owners’ agricultural expertise and community-driven model would help preserve the factory’s legacy while ensuring long-term viability and development in the region.
