Milly Fruit EPZ plant opens in Kilifi, processing mangoes, pineapples for export markets

This was made possible through the UK’s SUED Programme, facilitated by EPZA Kenya and implemented by FSD Kenya.

KENYA – The Milly Fruit EPZ processing plant in Kilifi County has been officially commissioned, marking a significant milestone for the local agricultural economy by transforming regional produce such as mangoes, oranges, passion fruit, and pineapples into high-value concentrates, pulp, and dried snacks.

Governor Gideon Maitha Mung’aro, County Government of Kilifi, UK Deputy High Commissioner Diana Dalton, alongside PS Abubakar Hassan and Dorothy Chepkoech, EPZA Board Director, commissioned the Milly Fruit EPZ Ltd Processing Plant in Sabaki, Magarini, Kilifi County.

The facility processes locally sourced fruits into dried fruits, pulp, and concentrates, creating a vital link between farmers and international markets. This industrial venture is expected to generate hundreds of new jobs while providing a stable income for over 1,000 local growers.

Furthermore, the project’s success stems from a strategic partnership involving Kenyan government officials and British developmental programmes. This was made possible through the UK’s SUED Programme, facilitated by EPZA Kenya and implemented by FSD Kenya.

Additionally, the collaboration aims to foster long-term prosperity by modernizing the way fruit is processed and sold within the region. The UK Deputy High Commissioner’s presence proves the importance of international partnerships in supporting economic growth in Kilifi County.

On the other hand, the facility creates specific employment opportunities across processing, quality control, logistics, and administration. Farmers benefit from guaranteed market access and reduced post-harvest losses, as fresh fruit can be processed immediately rather than spoiling during transit.

More importantly, the plant’s location in Magarini provides direct access to major fruit-producing areas, ensuring a consistent supply for processing operations. Dried fruits, pulp, and concentrates represent high-value products that attract premium prices in export markets.

Milly Fruit EPZ Ltd is set to create hundreds of jobs and support over 1,000 farmers, contributing to poverty reduction and economic development in the region. The processing plant’s establishment within the Export Processing Zone enables duty-free imports of equipment and preferential access to international markets.

This strategic positioning enhances the competitiveness of Kenyan processed fruit products globally. The partnership between county government, national government agencies, and international development partners demonstrates the potential of coordinated efforts to transform agricultural value chains.

In the end, long-term success depends on sustained investment in quality standards and market diversification to maintain export competitiveness.
