Spinneys launches in Iraq with two new stores

Lebanese retail group expands operations into Baghdad, targeting modern grocery shoppers

IRAQ – Gray Mackenzie Retail Lebanon Group announced that its Spinneys brand will open two new stores in Iraq, with the first location set for Iraq Mall in Baghdad in the first quarter of 2026 and the second at Baghdad Boulevard shortly after.

The Iraq Mall store will cover more than 7,000 square meters, positioning it as a key site for Spinneys’ entry into the Iraqi market and offering a combination of groceries, fresh produce, and general retail under one roof.

Iraq Mall, the largest shopping center in the country and the third-largest in the Middle East, is expected to draw millions of visitors annually and host a wide mix of regional and international retail brands.

The expansion comes amid a growing Iraqi economy and rising consumer demand for contemporary retail environments, which Gray Mackenzie views as a promising opportunity for Spinneys’ regional growth strategy.

Hassan Ezzeldine, Chairman of Gray Mackenzie Retail Lebanon Group, said the move into Iraq reflects the company’s intention to provide quality products and customer-focused retail experiences that align with the evolving preferences of Iraqi shoppers.

He added that the initiative will include partnerships with local suppliers, the creation of new jobs, and investment in community development, aiming to have an impact beyond the retail sector.

Gray Mackenzie, which has steadily grown its presence across the Middle East, emphasized that its approach to expansion involves integrating trusted brands with local market knowledge to meet operational and consumer needs effectively.

As the openings approach, the company confirmed that the Iraq stores will mirror the brand’s standards for fresh products, diverse selections, and service quality, while adapting to local shopping habits.

The group sees the Baghdad expansion as a foundational step in establishing a longer-term presence in Iraq and contributing to the modernization of the country’s retail landscape.

Industry analysts note that Spinneys’ entry may intensify competition among international and regional supermarket chains in Iraq, particularly in urban centers with increasing disposable incomes.

Gray Mackenzie did not disclose financial details of the Iraq expansion, but sources familiar with the project estimate initial investment costs could exceed US$25 million, covering construction, inventory, and operational setup.

The new stores are expected to open gradually in early 2026, with the Iraq Mall location leading the rollout and Baghdad Boulevard following within months, signaling the group’s commitment to a sustained presence in the market.
