Suez Canal handles maiden transit of LNG-powered CMA CGM NOTRE DAME

EGYPT – The Suez Canal Authority has announced the successful maiden transit of the CMA CGM NOTRE DAME, one of the world’s largest LNG-powered container ships with a carrying capacity of up to 24,212 TEUs, through the strategic waterway as part of the southbound convoy from Singapore to France.

The vessel measures 399.9 metres in length, 61.3 metres in width, and has a draft of 16.5 metres, with a gross tonnage of 245,000 tonnes.

Technological and Environmental Significance

The ship is powered by LNG and incorporates advanced artificial intelligence technologies designed to support operational efficiency. It operates on the FAL3 service linking the Far East with Northwestern Europe, demonstrating the growing role of LNG-powered vessels in long-haul intercontinental services.

LNG-powered mega-vessels offer lower emissions per container, aligning with the sustainability requirements of European and Gulf buyers for refrigerated cargo.

Suez Canal Authority Chairman Osama Rabie said the transit demonstrates the canal’s ability to accommodate the world’s largest and most technologically advanced container vessels. He noted that the Suez Canal continues to benefit from strategic advantages that support global supply chains and provide economic savings for shipping lines, reinforcing its role as a key trade corridor connecting East and West.

Navigational Procedures and Operational Excellence

The authority implemented necessary navigational procedures to ensure the vessel’s safe transit, including assigning a team of senior SCA pilots and providing navigational assistance via accompanying tugboats.

In accordance with authority protocol for vessels making their first passage, Rabie delegated senior pilots to board the vessel, welcome the crew, and present the ship’s captain with a commemorative gift marking the occasion.

The transit of the CMA CGM NOTRE DAME occurs as the Suez Canal Authority continues its efforts to enhance the canal’s appeal to major shipping lines by expanding operational capabilities and accommodating ever-larger vessels on key global trade routes.

In addition, the authority’s expanded operational capabilities and accommodation of increasingly larger vessels deployed on key global trade routes ensure that the canal remains the preferred route for the world’s largest container ships, including LNG-powered vessels carrying perishable cargo and refrigerated containers.
