New multiplex qPCR assay enables early spoilage detection, reducing testing time and enhancing quality assurance for beverage manufacturers.

USA – Thermo Fisher Scientific has launched the Thermo Scientific SureTect Beverage Spoilage Multiplex qPCR Assay, an industry-first quantitative PCR-based test designed to detect beverage spoilage organisms earlier and more accurately in the production process.
Developed in partnership with Coca-Cola Europacific Partners, the new assay expands the capabilities of the Thermo Scientific SureTect PCR System and is positioned to enhance quality assurance across the global beverage sector.
The SureTect Beverage Spoilage Multiplex qPCR Assay identifies over 100 strains of key spoilage microorganisms, including preservative-resistant yeasts, molds, lactic acid bacteria, and acetic acid bacteria.
By consolidating multiple organism targets into a single qPCR reaction, the test streamlines workflows and reduces testing time by up to 50 per cent compared with traditional culture-based methods.
Thermo Fisher says the system supports manufacturers in releasing batches with greater confidence and strengthens consumer trust in beverage quality.
The simplified all-in-one format also offers cost efficiencies and contributes to improved environmental sustainability by minimizing resource use associated with multiple individual tests.
Chris Armstrong, president of microbiology at Thermo Fisher Scientific, noted that rapid and reliable detection is essential for preventing costly disruptions.
He said product recalls can cause significant financial and reputational damage, and the new assay helps brands avoid such risks by providing faster and more precise batch testing results.
Raul Mesa, senior manager QESH at Coca-Cola Europacific Partners, highlighted the importance of proactive spoilage prevention. He said collaboration with Thermo Fisher ensures the company uses advanced scientific tools to maintain product integrity.
He added that high-throughput and secure testing solutions are vital for consistently delivering beverages that meet consumer expectations.
Thermo Scientific Orbitrap Exploris EFOX Mass Detector
The launch comes shortly after Thermo Fisher introduced another major innovation: the Thermo Scientific Orbitrap Exploris EFOX Mass Detector, the first high-resolution accurate mass Orbitrap system engineered specifically for environmental and food safety laboratories.
The EFOX platform enables laboratories to conduct detailed targeted analyses more efficiently and supports rapid assessment of public health risks.
Unlike traditional high-resolution instruments adapted from research applications, the Orbitrap Exploris EFOX is designed for routine testing workflows. It features intuitive operation and minimal setup requirements, allowing laboratories to achieve results within minutes while maintaining high data quality and throughput.
Together, the two product launches underscore Thermo Fisher Scientific’s continued investment in technologies that support safer production environments, enhanced consumer protection, and improved operational efficiency across the food and beverage industry.
