UMass Amherst launches US$120M Future of Food Initiative
It will also provide space for developing food products, sustainable processing, food safety research, and training for food entrepreneurs.
UNITED STATES – The University of Massachusetts Amherst has launched a US$120 million initiative to address major challenges facing the global food system, including climate change, food safety, and the need to feed a growing population, according to the university.
The Future of Food Initiative will fund a new 36,000-square-foot research facility, a multidisciplinary research center, an endowed chair in food science, and three endowed faculty positions.
The university said the initiative will focus on sustainable food production, food security, nutrition, and the development of new technologies across the food system.
The initiative will be funded by four US$30 million contributions from Paul and Diane Manning via their family foundation, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and UMass Amherst, plus an additional US$30 million to be raised by the UMass Amherst Foundation, according to the university.
A key part of the investment will be the Paul and Diane Manning Food Innovation Hub, expected to break ground on campus in late 2027.
The facility will include sensory testing laboratories, innovation kitchens, a food-grade pilot plant, a clinical testing laboratory, and a food demonstration kitchen. It will also provide space for food product development, sustainable processing, food safety research, and training for food entrepreneurs.
UMass Amherst Chancellor Javier A. Reyes said the university was “uniquely positioned to solve the biggest, most critical challenges facing the world’s food system.”
He added that UMass is committed to supporting cutting-edge research, providing hands-on student training, and fostering external partnerships to drive transformative solutions that strengthen climate-resilient agriculture, expand food equity and production, and create a healthier, more sustainable future of food for all.
The university will also establish the Center for the Future of Food, bringing together researchers from food science, agricultural sciences, nutrition, public health, engineering, computer science, business, and other disciplines.
In addition, the center will collaborate with external partners and the university’s Institute of Applied Life Sciences to investigate areas such as food safety and security, food chemistry, new food products, and processing and cultivation.
“Through this historic investment, UMass Amherst is creating a national model for interdisciplinary collaboration that will drive innovation across the entire food ecosystem,” said Peter Reinhart, Interim Director of the Center for the Future of Food.
“Our goal is not only to generate new knowledge, but to transform that knowledge into technologies, products and practices that improve lives and strengthen food systems around the world.”
