Victory Farms is expanding its operations with new hatchery

KENYA – Victory Farms is increasing its production capacity with the launch of a new hatchery facility at Roo Bay in Homa Bay County.
The company says the new hatchery, located in the Lake Victoria region, will enable the large-scale production of tilapia fingerlings to meet rising demand for affordable fish in Kenya and the broader East African market.
With this launch, Victory Farms has added 30,000 metric tonnes to its annual production capacity, making the hatchery the largest recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) facility of its kind in Africa.
The company said the hatchery will not only support high-volume production but also improve the quality of fingerlings, resulting in healthier fish and stronger yields for its aquaculture operations.
This facility adds to Victory Farms’ ongoing efforts to meet growing demand for tilapia as natural stocks in Lake Victoria continue to decline.
In late 2024, the company disclosed that it would invest US$5.8 million (Sh750 million) into expanding its cage farming footprint across Lake Victoria.
Regulatory filings indicate that the project will be established in a newly designated area near Sindo town, also in Homa Bay County.
Victory Farms is currently active in several counties along Lake Victoria, including Migori, Kisumu, Busia, and Siaya, and the new location will add to this network.
Fish farming in cages has become an increasingly critical source of income and food security in the region, as traditional fishing yields continue to fall.
The model was first piloted in 2013 by the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI) in Kisumu County and has since gained traction among both private investors and local communities.
Victory Farms has also signed agreements with the management of seven beaches along the lake, including Jiw Dendi, Nyagwethe, Kisegi, Litare, and Uterere, to facilitate the expansion project.
