South Africa deciduous fruit body Hortgro appoints Jacques du Preez as new CEO

SOUTH AFRICA – Hortgro has appointed Jacques du Preez as Chief Executive Officer, effective 1 August 2026, succeeding Anton Rabe who is retiring after leading the South African deciduous fruit industry through multiple changes including deregulation in 1997.

To begin with, Anton Rabe’s career holds historical significance because he steered the industry through major regulatory shifts over several decades, including the critical deregulation of 1997.

Under his leadership, Hortgro expanded its activities in research, market development, and industry representation. “Anton’s vision, dedication, and passion for this industry have left an indelible mark on South African agriculture,” said Hortgro Board Chairperson Nicholas Dicey.

Therefore, Rabe will remain involved during the leadership transition until at least mid-2027, continuing to support industry activities at a strategic level.

On the other hand, Jacques du Preez brings qualifications that align directly with current industry challenges.

He holds an Honours degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of the Free State and completed undergraduate studies in agricultural economics and horticulture at Stellenbosch University.

His professional expertise focuses on market access, trade policy, phytosanitary compliance, logistics, and export market development within the deciduous fruit sector.

During his time at Hortgro, du Preez has been involved in international market-access negotiations and export market expansion, while also representing the industry in engagements with government departments and international forums.

“I am deeply honoured to assume this leadership role at such a pivotal moment for our industry. Hortgro’s strength lies in the trust and collaboration among growers, government, and our international partners. It will be difficult to step into Anton’s shoes. He is a true legend of the industry, but I look forward to building on his remarkable legacy and pursuing new opportunities for South Africa’s deciduous fruit sector on the global stage,” said du Preez.

Furthermore, Du Preez will lead by leveraging his experience in regulatory affairs, phytosanitary management, export strategy, and stakeholder coordination.

His familiarity with the organization, having served as General Manager: Trade & Markets, ensures continuity while his fresh perspective may help navigate future industry challenges.

The smooth transition plan, with Rabe remaining available strategically until mid-2027, minimizes disruption risk.

With du Preez’s trade expertise and collaborative approach, South African deciduous fruit is poised to grow its global market share while delivering fair returns to growers.
