Checkers opens new Palm Boulevard store in Umhlanga, South Africa
SOUTH AFRICA – Checkers opened a new supermarket at Palm Boulevard in Umhlanga on 28 May 2026, adding another outlet to the retailer’s presence in Durban North as its parent company, Shoprite Group, continues to expand its premium grocery formats across South Africa.
The store is situated within the Umhlanga Ridge commercial district near the Gateway Theatre of Shopping, an area known for high-end residential developments, retail centres, hotels, and tourism activity, while the latest opening also places the supermarket chain alongside the existing Checkers Hyper operating within the same precinct.
Although detailed specifications for the branch have not yet been released, the retailer’s recent store launches indicate that the Palm Boulevard outlet is expected to focus on fresh produce, in-store bakery offerings, prepared meals, and meat products, as Checkers continues to target middle- and upper-income consumers in urban areas.
The branch is also likely to carry premium private-label ranges, including Forage and Feast, as well as the health-oriented Simple Truth line, while modern Checkers outlets have increasingly incorporated specialist sections such as sushi counters, wine departments, coffee stations, and wellness-focused product areas.
In addition, the new store is expected to integrate services such as the Sixty60 delivery platform and Money Market facilities as the retailer expands convenience-based shopping options across its supermarket network.
Expansion across South Africa
The Palm Boulevard launch follows several other Checkers and Checkers FreshX developments introduced during 2025 and 2026, including a more than 3,000-square-metre FreshX branch at La Lucia Mall in KwaZulu-Natal, a flagship FreshX reopening at Hyde Park Corner in Sandton, and a Checkers Hyper at Westown Square in Shongweni.
Earlier expansion projects have also included the Groot Phesantekraal development in Durbanville, which combined a Checkers supermarket with specialist retail concepts such as LiquorShop, Little Me, Outdoor, Petshop Science, and UNIQ Clothing while creating 146 jobs.
Shoprite Group has added hundreds of stores nationally over the past year as it increases investment in large-format supermarkets, neighbourhood stores, and standalone speciality retail outlets across multiple provinces.
New supermarket openings generally result in additional employment opportunities for retail workers, bakers, butchery staff, logistics personnel, and management teams, while growing commercial hubs such as Umhlanga continue attracting investment from major grocery chains competing for market share in South Africa’s retail sector.
Checkers stores typically trade daily between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m., with opening promotions and introductory specials often accompanying new branch launches.
