Aldi commits US$6.25 billion to UK farming and expands logistics network

New distribution centre in Leicestershire becomes central to national operations.

UK – Discounter Aldi has announced a US$6.25 billion investment programme aimed at UK agriculture, with the company saying the funding will be directed through extended agreements with domestic suppliers to provide more predictable purchasing conditions across its food network, spanning meat, dairy and fresh produce supply chains, over the coming years.

The retailer said the commitments will be structured as long-term contracts with farmers and producers, designed to give them a clearer view of demand and allow for more stable business planning, including pricing visibility and delivery volumes across its UK supply base.

The agreements, which generally run for two years, will apply to categories including beef, poultry, eggs, dairy products, and fresh fruit and vegetables, while Aldi also intends to source half of its UK-produced goods through such contracts by the end of 2027 across core grocery categories.

Aldi UK chief commercial officer Julie Ashfield said British suppliers remain central to the company’s operations, adding that the arrangements are intended to help producers make investment decisions and strengthen their production capacity over time as part of its supply chain planning.

Aldi Bardon facility

In a separate development, Aldi has opened a large-scale distribution centre in Bardon, Leicestershire, which it described as the largest supermarket warehouse in the United Kingdom, handling nationwide store replenishment.

The company said it has invested about US$625 million in the 1.3 million-square-foot site, which is expected to supply 350 stores and provide employment for around 1,000 workers once fully operational, as part of its wider distribution network expansion and to support future store openings.

Aldi UK and Ireland chief executive Giles Hurley said the facility’s technology systems are intended to improve efficiency across the retailer’s logistics operations, supporting its pricing strategy for customers across the UK and Ireland network.

He added that the group’s expansion strategy is centred on increasing access to stores nationwide, with continued investment in new outlets and infrastructure aimed at reaching a network of 1,500 stores across the country, supporting longer-term growth plans in the UK market while reinforcing its aim of widening physical retail presence across the country long term.
