IFPA appoints John Torres as Vice President of US Government Relations

USA – The International Fresh Produce Association has appointed John Torres as its Vice President to head its US Government Relations department effective August 10, highlighting the organization’s commitment to legislative advocacy on behalf of its global fresh produce and floral community.

With nearly two decades of experience spanning agriculture, food, environment, and life sciences policy, Torres will lead IFPA’s US advocacy, government relations, grassroots engagement, and political affairs strategy.

He will also oversee the association’s political action committee (FreshPAC) and strengthen the organization’s voice in Washington, DC. “Members have told us advocacy is their top priority, and we’re excited to add a leader and policy expert of John’s caliber to IFPA,” said IFPA CEO Cathy Burns.

“His experience and strong connections with legislators will further enhance our advocacy efforts on issues ranging from trade to nutrition to production and more.”

Torres holds a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from The Ohio State University and the Certified Association Executive credential from the American Society of Association Executives.

Furthermore, prior to joining IFPA, Torres was a principal with the Bockorny Group, a DC-based boutique government relations firm, where he led the firm’s work in food, agriculture, animal health, life sciences, and rural development.

He has also held leadership roles across the Farm Bureau network, including the American Farm Bureau Federation and Ohio Corn & Wheat Growers Association. His background as a former commodities trader with Archer Daniels Midland gives him a comprehensive understanding of the supply chain and production challenges facing members.

The primary advocacy priorities for IFPA include shaping the farm bill, influencing trade policy, securing appropriations for fresh produce programmes, and advancing nutrition policy. The association also focuses on sustainability, production issues, and creating an enabling business environment for members.

“John’s expertise on policy issues such as the farm bill, appropriations, trade, and environment is a strong complement to the skills already present in our existing Government Relations team,” said IFPA Chief Global Policy Officer Alexis Taylor.

“Our members will appreciate the depth of his knowledge as we continue to fight for fresh together.”

Lastly, this strategic appointment aims to amplify the industry’s influence on critical issues such as sustainability, nutrition, and the farm bill. The association seeks to leverage his extensive network and specialized expertise to foster a more favourable business environment for the global produce community.
