Southern Shipping builds 10,000-pallet warehouse at Mombasa’s Miritini site
The warehouse is minutes from the Port of Mombasa, enabling faster cargo transfers, quicker turnaround, and fewer bottlenecks for imports and exports.
KENYA – Southern Shipping Services Ltd has begun construction of a Grade-A, multi-temperature, multi-commodity warehouse at its existing Miritini site in Mombasa, adding 10,000 pallet positions to the region’s storage capacity, the company said.
Southern Shipping Services Ltd (SSSL), an Alpha Group company founded in 1994, has more than 20 years of experience in East Africa’s logistics and oil and gas sectors and operates cold chain warehousing and supply chain management services from Mombasa.
Its new facility will offer frozen, chilled, and ambient environments for fresh produce, food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, FMCG, consumer products, fashion, and IT hardware.
The multi-temperature zones are designed to accommodate diverse goods with varying storage requirements, from temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals to perishable agricultural products.
Port integration and location
The warehouse is minutes from the Port of Mombasa, enabling faster cargo transfers, quicker turnaround, and fewer bottlenecks for imports and exports. It sits on the Mombasa-Nairobi Highway, positioning it for regional and international trade routes.
The Miritini site is located near the Standard Gauge Railway’s Mombasa terminus and the Mombasa Container Terminal. The Port of Mombasa handles approximately 2.1 million TEUs annually and serves as a gateway for goods moving to and from Kenya and several landlocked countries, including Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan.
Sustainability standards
The facility is being built to LEED Gold standards, focusing on optimizing energy efficiency and reducing its carbon footprint.
LEED Gold certification requires compliance with criteria covering energy performance, water efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality, according to the U.S. Green Building Council.
Regional supply chain impact
The investment reflects a commitment to sustainable logistics supporting business growth across East Africa. The additional pallet positions and multi-temperature capability are expected to support importers and exporters handling temperature-sensitive cargo through the Port of Mombasa.
The project follows other cold chain and warehousing investments in Kenya, including Swissport’s 630-square-meter temperature-controlled facility at Kilimanjaro International Airport in Tanzania and Africa Global Logistics’ expansion of its transport fleet in Angola.
Finally, this investment aims to provide sustainable, world-class supply chain solutions that support the economic expansion of East Africa, with the company maintaining a focus on operational efficiency and environmental responsibility.
