Eskort appoints Herman Janse van Rensburg as group CEO

Eskort says the leadership transition is set to support the pork producer’s manufacturing expansion, retail growth and product innovation.

SOUTH AFRICA – First Food Brands has appointed Herman Janse van Rensburg as group CEO of Eskort, the South African pork producer known for its antibiotic-free pork range, effective March 1, 2027.

Van Rensburg, currently general manager of Lactalis South Africa, will join Eskort’s management team on January 1, 2027, for a two-month induction period ahead of formally taking over the leadership role.

Outgoing group CEO Arnold Prinsloo will support the transition.

Eskort board chairperson Gerard Braak said Van Rensburg’s financial expertise, operational experience and executive leadership would support the company’s next phase of development, particularly as it expands manufacturing capacity, strengthens its retail presence and advances product innovation.

Van Rensburg joined Lactalis South Africa 16 years ago as a financial manager and progressed through several senior leadership positions, including executive management control, business unit executive and chief operating officer, before becoming general manager.

Lactalis South Africa is part of the global Lactalis Group and operates a national dairy manufacturing and distribution network employing approximately 2,700 people.

His experience in managing a large food manufacturing and distribution business is expected to be relevant to Eskort’s operations across pork processing, branded products and retail.

Commenting on his appointment, Van Rensburg said he looked forward to building on Eskort’s 109-year heritage while adapting the business to changing consumer preferences and market demands.

The leadership change comes as food manufacturers face increasing pressure to balance production efficiency, product innovation, food safety and changing consumer expectations.

For meat processors, maintaining consistent quality while expanding distribution and developing value-added products remains important to competitiveness in an increasingly demanding food market.

Prinsloo’s departure marks the end of a leadership tenure that began when he joined Eskort as chief operating officer before becoming CEO on July 1, 2007.

During his time at the helm, Eskort expanded its manufacturing capabilities and grew its branded retail network to more than 30 stores across eight South African provinces.

The company also developed a portfolio of more than 300 antibiotic-free pork products, strengthening its presence in the country’s processed meat and packaged food segments.

Braak credited Prinsloo with guiding the business through significant challenges and periods of growth, noting that he would leave behind a stronger and more diversified operation.

Under Van Rensburg’s leadership, Eskort is expected to build on this foundation, with manufacturing development, retail expansion and continued product innovation remaining central to its growth strategy.
