The firm will continue to focus on ingredients, packaged goods, and food service businesses, particularly in the Southeastern United States.

USA – Axum Capital Partners has announced the launch of a new investment fund targeting US$300 million in committed capital, with a focus on health and wellness-oriented food and beverage companies.
The Charlotte-based private equity firm said the fund reflects its sharpened strategy and will be supported by an expanded leadership team to drive its next phase of growth.
Founded by Managing Partners Denis Ackah-Yensu, Muhsin Muhammad II, and Raymond Groth, Axum has built a strong track record investing in better-for-you food and beverage businesses.
The firm weathered challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic while continuing to deliver value for investors and portfolio brands.
With demand for healthier, sustainable options accelerating, Axum plans to prioritize family-owned and founder-led businesses with strong growth prospects, profitability, and mission-driven leadership.
Muhsin Muhammad II, Managing Partner, said the fund aligns with evolving consumer preferences.
“Our food choices are fundamental, and today’s consumers want healthier, better-for-you options. This is where Axum thrives. We not only live this lifestyle, but we’ve also been investing in this space for years, and our expertise and relationships give us a clear advantage in building the next generation of leading brands,” he stated.
Axum recently invested in Le Botaniste, a 100% organic, plant-forward restaurant, highlighting its commitment to scaling innovative concepts.
The firm will continue to focus on ingredients, packaged goods, and food service businesses, particularly in the Southeastern United States.
Expanded leadership team to strengthen strategy
To execute its refined approach, Axum has added seasoned investors, operators, and transaction specialists to its leadership.
Lance Johnson and Derrick Brown have joined as General Partners and will co-lead deal origination.
Johnson brings more than 25 years of experience in mergers, acquisitions, and capital markets, while Brown leverages his background as a former NBA and EuroLeague player turned investor with interests in Clean Juice, Salata Salad Kitchen, and Hustle House Fitness.
The team also includes Ezra Field, former Chief Investment Officer at Roark Capital, who will serve as Advisor; Josh Burris, former CEO of GNC, who joins as Operating Partner; and Lynn Girts, who becomes Chief Financial Officer with over 20 years of experience in fund management and process optimization.
James Floyd, an Operating Partner since 2023, will continue to work with portfolio leadership teams on growth initiatives.
Additionally, Axum has established a broad advisory board and a network of industry experts to support its investment activities.
Muhammad noted that the leadership team came together through long-standing trusted relationships, united by values of teamwork, accountability, and resilience.
Cultural influence and athlete engagement
Axum is also leveraging cultural influence and athlete engagement as part of its strategy.
With Muhammad’s NFL background and Brown’s experience in the NBA and EuroLeague, the firm has established unique connections within the professional athlete community.
It has partnered with 7K, the creative agency founded by NBA star Stephen Curry, and with Toronto-based Acuity Partners, which advises on best practices in private equity.
Muhammad said the combination of capital, expertise, and cultural engagement offers Axum a unique position in the market.
“Our mission is simple: partner with visionary entrepreneurs to grow exceptional brands and deliver meaningful value for all stakeholders,” he added.
